About The Pack
The newest release from the Thousand Candles vineyard by Stu Proud is very impressive.
The wines from this hallowed patch of the Yarra Valley all share a common feel. They are savoury and structured and completely unique.
With the formidable vineyard management skills of Stu Proud producing brilliant results in the wines, the rebirth of the Thousand Candles project is in full flight.
Here's the best way to try the new releases from the excellent 2017 Yarra Valley vintage.
2017 Thousand Candles Gathering Field Red Blend
There's seems to be a resurgence in the classic medium-bodied 'luncheon-Claret' from the Yarra Valley. Here's a lovely example from Stu Proud and the iconic Thousand Candles vineyard.
This is built from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc from the younger vines on the property planted in 2011-2012. Stu loves the way that Merlot offers so much lush, deep plummy fruit in the mouth, using the Cabernets to lend a little structure and definition.
It lends itself beautifully to long lazy lunches with a slow cooked lamb shoulder on the table. It's not a profound 'Bordeaux blend', but it's a flat out delicious one to drink.

2017 Thousand Candles Single Vineyard Field Blend
The Thousand Candles Field Blend is the flagship release from Stu Proud at the new look Thousand Candles vineyard.
This is a wine intended to showcase the best fruit of the season. The 2017 blend is built from Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Merlot - a unique blend, no doubt, but one that represents the best of the best from the Thousand Candles team in the stellar 2017 vintage.
You get all the tantalising vibrant aromatics from the Pinot Noir, the spice and firmness from the Yarra Valley Shiraz and the Merlot lends seductive base notes of black olive and some lush fruit.
The structure here is excellent. The balance, bang on. This wine tells a unique story of a great vineyard in a great vintage. It's a brilliant release from Stu and the team.

2017 Thousand Candles Gathering Field Pinot Noir
Viticultural-guru-come-winemaker Stuart Proud bringing an excellent release to bottle from 2017 under the Thousand Candles banner. From a close to perfect vintage in the Yarra Valley, Stuart selected the best blocks of Pinot Noir from this famous, or perhaps infamous, Yarra Valley site.
It's a carefully etched lattice work of a wine. So clearly Yarra Valley in its accent but with some defining features - tannin structure namely - that could only come from a vineyard of special character.
It's a wine which sets a new tone for the brand. The unforced and uncomplicated wine in the bottle is simply great value.
