Chardonnay is probably our favourite white grape. Here are six of our favourite anytime, anywhere Chardonnays that we have highly recommend to anyone looking for a great value Chardy fix.
Patrick Sullivan is a name synonymous with exceptional Australian Chardonnay.
Here's a top-value way to sample his sensational stylings with this variety, with this very reasonably-priced entry-level Pat Sullivan wine!
This celebrates the volcanic soils of Southern Australia with a wine that strikes a lovely balance between richness, well-defined fruit, and distinctive soil-derived minerality.
The vineyards are nestled along Australia's unique limestone coast. This region is the world's third-largest volcanic plain, harbouring approximately 400 dormant volcanoes. Who knew?!
Pat's deep-rooted connection to this area, where he spent much of his childhood, fills him with tremendous enthusiasm as he offers this great modern representation of Australian Chardonnay.

Another fantastic release here of one of Victoria's best-value Chardonnays.
Barney Flanders pulls from a tidy mix of Mornington vineyards here, anchored by 25-year-old vines across Balnarring, Merricks North, Merricks and Tuerong. All whole-bunch pressed, wild fermented in big 500L puncheons, and left alone on lees for seven months. Just long enough to get the palate weight ramped up a fraction before bottling.
Gee, it looks good, even at this early stage of its life. There’s a cool glide to the palate - citrus skin, white nectarine, maybe a flick of jasmine - with a subtle nip of oak and a gentle creamy ripple from partial malo. It's class-act Chardonnay that feels much more premium than the price tag suggests.
There is never a lot of this wine around and given the value on offer, it's no wonder. Great buying.

"This is juicy and flavoursome... It’s such a tasty Chardonnay. Everything is in the right place."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
Increasingly, Chardonnay is becoming the headline act in the Gentle Folk range. Gareth Belton is producing some of the most thrilling examples in the Adelaide Hills, and this 2025 release might just be the most complete version of his "Village" blend yet.
This wine is a composite picture of the region, sourced from Gareth’s top sites across the Hills, including Ashton, Scary Gully, Summertown and Piccadilly. The vines range from 5 to 32 years old, digging into complex soils of sandstone, schist and quartz.
While previous releases have sometimes been tight and racy in their youth, the 2025 is noticeably richer and more generous. The fruit weight is substantial this year, and the oak integration is seamless right out of the gate.
Vinified with 100% whole clusters and aged for nine months in a mix of French and Austrian oak (20% new), it delivers exceptional flavour development. There is still that signature racy backbone of acidity, but it is wrapped in a layer of flesh and texture that makes it stunning to drink immediately. It is complex, it is settled, and it is seriously good.

The wine takes its name from the 1.6-hectare vineyard planted in 1985, where backpackers often perform "The Dance of the Paper Wasp" to avoid the nests hidden in the canopy during harvest. Now 40 years old, these vines on sandy loam soil produce fruit with serious concentration.
It is 100% barrel fermented in a mix of new and old French oak, with monthly lees stirring and partial malolactic fermentation. This gives the wine a rich, creamy texture that fills the mouth without weighing it down. It is full-bodied and generous but retains that vital freshness you need. A wonderfully versatile Chardonnay that delivers terrific bang for your buck.
Read MoreFor our money, Julian Langworthy’s SR (Sub-Regional) Chardonnay is consistently one of the best value buys in all of Margaret River. It delivers a level of detail and pedigree that you usually have to pay twice as much for.
The 2025 release is a masterclass in overdelivering. Sourced from four top-tier vineyards - Grace & White, Wilson, Victory Point, and Tassell Road - it captures exactly what makes the region so famous for this variety.
Despite a warm and early season, Margaret River's coastal breezes kept the fruit perfectly balanced. Julian treats this with the same serious winemaking as his top-tier releases: it’s hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed, wild-fermented in puncheons, and left untouched on its lees to build crucial mid-palate weight.
It's a delicious, mid-weight Chardonnay that is incredibly easy to drink. It balances generous fruit and texture with a fine, chalky structure and sherbet-like acidity. If you want a serious Margaret River Chardonnay that you don't have to feel guilty about cracking open on a Tuesday night, you need this on standby.
Read MoreRicky Evans knows Tamar Valley Chardonnay. After years making it for bigger producers, TMV is his chance to craft it exactly how he wants—pure, bright, and packed with personality.
Sourced from five standout sites, with Woodlawn Park leading the way (70%), this Chardonnay is a true reflection of the region’s cool-climate charm. The breezy, river-cooled vineyards deliver fruit with both racy freshness and generous weight, striking that perfect Tassie balance. Think ripe white peach, lemon curd, and a lick of sea spray minerality, underpinned by sleek acidity and just a hint of well-judged oak.
Fermented mostly in puncheons, with a single foudre in the mix (15% new), it spent 10 months on lees, gaining texture without losing its crisp, focused edge. Partial malolactic fermentation rounds things out, ensuring the wine stays fresh yet layered.
A serious Chardonnay without the serious price tag. If you’re looking for top-tier Tassie Chardonnay that over-delivers, this is it.
