About The Pack

The 2018 Giant Steps wines are without a doubt benchmarks for theYarra Valley.

Winemaker Steve Flamsteed and his team manage several different individual vineyards across the region, here are three of his finest Pinot Noirs that showcase individual sites.

Each wine is made almost identically with a mix of whole-bunch and whole-berry ferment. The aim from Flamsteed is to showcase the differences in site - when you taste them side by side the differences are stark.

If you love Pinot Noir, do not hesitate over these releases. They are some of the finest wines in the country crafted by a winemaker at the height of his powers.

2018 Giant Steps Applejack Vineyard Pinot Noir

The Applejack Pinot Noir is from the cooler climes of Gladysdale in the Yarra Valley.

This is one of the jewels in the Giant Steps crown. A wine that shows incredible power and structure from day one, Applejack is now seen as one of the benchmark Pinot Noirs of the region.

With a healthy amount of whole bunches and a splash of new oak, the wine has plenty of oomph - it really is the complete package. The 2018 Giant Steps wines are all of very high quality. Without a doubt some of the finest releases for the region from the 2018 season. Flamsteed says he believes this to be the best release of Applejack Pinot Noir to date.

Applejack is often the fastest to sell out of the Giant Steps range. If you love Pinot Noir, do not hesitate over this release.

"Applejack rising into iconic status for vineyards of the Yarra off the back of many great Giant Steps wines. Sleek and fresh-feeling pinot noir, pepper and garrigue-spiked sour cherry scents and flavours, cool and refined feel, great length, high drinkability. A light crunch to tannins, sheath of which holds the wine tight and long in shape and form. This has some mojo, loaded with personality in its slender, transparent feel. This I like, great energy here."

2018 Giant Steps Wombat Creek Vineyard Pinot Noir

Wombat Creek is the highest in altitude of the Single Vineyard releases and it shows in the finesse and structure of the wine.

This comes from rom an older planting of Pinot Noir in Gladysdale. The fruit was originally intended for sparkling, though in the hands of Flamsteed, an immaculate table wine has come to fruition.

This is one of the more limited wines of the 2018 Giant Steps Single Vineyard release and won't be available for long.

"Whoa, hold onto your hat here, powerful whiffs of green herb, white pepper, faint mezcal, just ripe red cherry. Palate is light, glossy, silky but defined with talc-like tannins, sour-sweet flavours, green herbs, pepper again. Strong whole bunch kind of character, refreshing, fine, tat-work-lacy, sleek. Sheesh, this is a good and unique feel."

2018 Giant Steps Primavera Vineyard Pinot Noir

Primavera is an outlier in the Giant Steps Single Vineyard series.

This vineyard sits on red clay in the Upper Yarra, oddly a site that excels in warmer vintages.

The wine released from Flamsteed in 2018 is incredibly floral and seductive - perhaps the softest and most sensual of the Pinot Noirs this year. Stunning drinking now or for the cellar.

"Pale garnet colour. Light, delicate but defined perfume of pomegranate juice, green herbs, white pepper, faint game meat. Lovely. Swishes through the mouth with supple sour cherry, game meat, a lick of dark chocolate and tannins of fine, powdered chocolate, finishes with an earthy-amaro-like botanical lick. Geez, I like this. Plenty of personality, high drinkability, electric acidity, pretty flavour and freshness in spades. Delicious drinking, charismatic, exotic. Love it."
