About The Wine

The Farvie Grenache represents the very finest expression possible of Grenache from the Swinney vineyard in Frankland River.

Named after George (Farvie) John Alexander Swinney who settled in the Frankland area in 1922, there is no time or expense spared in crafting this cuveé.

The finest parts of the vineyard have been identified over the last 20 years, with those portions being hand-picked over multiple passes for this wine. Only the best bunches make the cut. Only the finest large format oak.

It's a wine that has thrown a cat amongst the pigeons of Australia's wine media. Since its debut release in 2018 it has quickly risen to the top echelon of Australian Grenache.

About Swinney

The Swinney family's roots in Frankland River stretch back over 100 years.

George John Alexander Swinney was a pioneer of the region, settling a grazing property in Franklands in 1922. Today the property is run by fourth generation brother and sister, Matt and Janelle Swinney. They are taking the family property into great new territory.

Bush vines litter the property. Riesling, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre are fining a very happy home on the ironstone slopes above the Frankland River.

Now, with viticulturalist wizard Lee Haselgrove tending the vines and sixth generation winemaker Rob Mann crafting the wines in the cellar, this label is on track to become one of the regional benchmarks in short order.

From The Producer

The fruit was hand-picked from established bush vine Grenache and Mourvèdre on our Frankland River vineyard, berry sorted and gravity fed to a French oak vat (1600 litres). We incorporated 8% whole bunch Grenache and 12% Mourvèdre followed by wild fermentation to build structure and texture and provide the framework on which to express the distinctive aromatics and flavours of Grenache.

The wine spent 10 days on skins prior to basket pressing directly to fine grained large format seasoned French oak followed by aging for 11 months prior to bottling. The wine was made with minimum effective Sulphites, it is unfined and minimally filtered.

"What a follow-up to the remarkable 2018 debut. The high perfumed notes strike immediately and almost define what is to follow. It’s a very pretty wine with more seductive perfumed notes than the 2018, most likely a result of the slightly cooler vintage. There is about 12 per cent Mourvèdre in the blend and all the fruit comes off the Swinney bush vines. Only large-format seasoned oak has been used. A striking wine of refinement and power that delivers with an effortless deft touch. This is a modern grenache with a distinctive Frankland stamp." - Ray Jordan (The West Australian)

"Tightly wound, seriously structured red. Tannins are, as Swinney vineyard seems to give us, exceptional, taut and long, providing strict boundaries and dragging the wine into the distance. The perfume is quiet, a mottled affair of wet logs, dark cherry, anise, mushroom, the by-word is savoury, but it’s on mute. Generous flavours, again, cherry, mushroom, but more spicy, almost tactile spice, ferrous things too. The coda really is about those tannins. So superb. Hand-picked fruit from an established block of bush vines. 8% of grenache was whole bunches, the rest whole berries sorted and gravity-fed to a single large French oak vat (1600L). What sets hearts on fire the world over for Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the muscular, ferrous, salty raspberry humbug and minerally hutzpah. It sets the high-tide mark for grenache. We grenache drinkers yearn for it. And here it is. The strength of Frankland River is its ability to marry sweet (glossy) red fruit to savoury, gravelly earth. Do I have to order in dozens? No, please mix it up! You can order wines in any quantity and variation you like. You can order 1 bottle or 50. We challenge you to make the ultimate mixed pack of wine!

Are there volume discounts? No, our pricing is designed to be the best in market already - no marking up and then discounting down! For very large orders (weddings, etc) we are open to negotiating though. Just give us a call.

Do we price match? Yes, within reason. Everyday low & consistent pricing is something we strongly believe in. We want our customers to feel confident they are always getting the best price. If you see a price lower somewhere else let us know and we'll consider matching it. We'll even retrospectively issue you store credit if you have already purchased from us but you see a lower price somewhere later on. Our price match policy can be seen here.

Can coupons and discounts be stacked? No, only one discount or coupon can be applied to an order at once.

I am trying to add more of a wine to my cart but it won’t let me? This means we are running low on stock of that wine. So for example, if the website will only allow you to add 3 bottles and no more, then that is all we have of that particular wine. The good news is we may be able to order more for you. Just contact us on 02 8376 8775 or and we'll organise the additional quantity for you.

Does Different Drop have a physical store? No. Just an a warehouse/office. We occasionally do events however, so sign up to our newsletter or follow us on instagram to stay in the loop.

Can I special order a wine you do not sell? If it’s doable, then we’ll make it happen. Just contact us directly via phone, chat or email and we’ll find out for you right away. Please note that in most cases special orders such as these will need to be in full case lots (6 or 12 bottles).
