About The Wine
The Rogue from Domaine Matassa is made from 100% intensely old vine Carignan grown on marne soils.
Tom Lubbe farms these gnarled old vines with great care. They were planted between 1895 and 1900. The trunks are all twisted and knotted and the branches reach into the air like a curled claw. Looking at his vineyard is like looking at some strange alien forest. These old warhorse vines produce lovely fruit.
The Carignan has a levity to it, showing crunchy blue fruits and cherry with an erathy undercurrant that keeps it grounded. Excellent stuff from this iconic producer.
About Matassa
Tom Lubbe is something of a cult icon in the world of natural wine.
A New Zealand native, Tom was one of the pioneers of the South African wine revolution that has taken place over the last couple of decades. His low-intervention approach flew in the face of the conventional wineries of South Africa that dominated the wine scene. His fascinating wines helped spawn a generation of exciting new producers across the country.
After he met his wife Nathalie during working vintage at the great Domaine Gauby, Tom decided to stay in France and launch Domaine Matassa. His wines are now adored the world over. These are old-vine meticulously farmed wines that offer a unique, unadultered sense of place. Some of the most hunted natural wines in the world today.
