About

About The Wine

A formidable wine here from a classic producer and now regarded as one of Australia's best Chardonnay wines. The Farrs sum up this stunning wine best themselves:

"The GC Chardonnay (GC – Gary Charles) is attributed to all the knowledge we have been able to extract from Gary to create a close planted / high density planting of chardonnay on an exposed cote... It's a complete chardonnay."

It's a powerful Chardonnay that makes you sit back and take notice. Full of fruit and body and personality.

A brilliant wine and a rare gem, perfect either for the cellar and/or a special occasion.

About By Farr / Farr Rising

Gary Farr is one of the most iconic winemakers in Victoria, or indeed, the country. He was responsible for taking Bannockburn in Geelong to the startling heights it reached as one of the benchmark producers of Burgundian varieties in the country. His own label, By Farr, is quite simply one of Australia's finest producers.

The Farr vineyards are based in the Moorabool Valley in Geelong, with a wide array of ancient soils resulting in small yields of incredibly intensely flavoured Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Shiraz and Viognier. With Gary's son Nick now making the wines, as well as taking his own Farr Rising label to monumental heights, this is a project set to dominate Geelong wine for years to come.

If you want to see one of the country's great winemaking families at work, anything by the Farrs will be one of the best examples of its kind in the country. Sheer class, guaranteed.

From The Producer

The GC Chardonnay (GC – Gary Charles) is attributed to all the knowledge we have been able to extract from Gary to create a close planted / high density planting of chardonnay on a exposed cote. These hillsides facing North, North East and East will be the backbone of the Farr dynasty for decades to come.

They consist of the most suitable clones, rootstocks, trellising and management you fill find for our landscape. This is our tribute to what ‘Gazza’ has achieved and provoked over 40 years not only in our region but for chardonnay and pinot noir of Australia.

The North cote is a red to brown loam with buckshot stones across the surface. The most exposed of the three cotes but is harvested last of all because of the large amount of clay, holding valuable moisture for a long longer time than the other slopes.

The North East cote is a continuation of buckshot until the soil becomes black and lined with limestone moving towards the bottom of the rows and a depression that divides limestone from sandstone. At the highest point of the vineyard you will find small amounts of sandstone in the grey sandy loam.

The East cote is divided through the center of the slope by a rise. Black volcanic soil with fragmented limestone in one direction and grey loam with buckshot stones in the other direction. Soil is King as the East cote has the least amount of clay and therefore water holding capacity resulting in it being harvest first even though it is the coolest cote of the three.

Vinification
The fruit is hand-picked then whole-bunch pressed in the winery. All the solids are collected and chilled before being put to barrel, which are 35 per cent new French oak. A natural fermentation will occur at cool temperatures over the next one to two months, and then a small amount of stirring helps start malolactic fermentation. The wine is then racked, fined and lightly filtered before bottling 11 months after picking. A complete chardonnay.

Critic Reviews

DDS review

"A wine with great fruit presence and varietal character at the front of the palate, the power of this site then takes over the palate and finishes with a very assertive line of acidity. It is a vintage of great balance and completeness. As our greatest expression of chardonnay this wine has very quickly commanded a strong following around the world." - Nick Farr

"This 2019, well, wow. This is a wine of clear, sheer quality. Varietal flavour, juicy, bright, pristine, irrepressible. It’s taut and complex but the fruit is just so unstoppably juicy. Cracked wheat and white peach flavours have plenty to say, as do cedarwood and pear, but everything is soaked through with the other, no flavour or aspect works in isolation. in short, this is a wonderful white wine." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
