About the Wine

Yarra Yering can do no wrong under the guidance of winemaking master Sarah Crowe, and this Chardonnay is yet another stellar release.

Coming from 1969-planted vines, this wonderful white wine is detailed and powerful all at once, with the length and complexity to keep you coming back to your glass for more.

One of the Yarra's finest Chardonnays and great to either drink now, or for the cellar.  Extremely limited.

About Yarra Yering

Yarra Yering is one of the most iconic wineries of the modern Yarra Valley.

Founded in 1969 by the visionary vigneron Dr. Bailey Carrodous, Yarra Yering has become a benchmark in quality and one of the most collected wineries in the country.

From this small patch of earth in the North of the Gruyere sub-region, Dr. Carrodous produced these legendary wines for more than three decades. In the process becoming recognised as one of the most influential winemakers in the Yarra's history.

Today, the wines are crafted by the talented Sarah Crowe. She brings the wines to bottle with the same passion and attention to detail that made the great Yarra Yering wines of old so revered.

Additional Info

From the Producer

Vines: The two original Chardonnay blocks, planted in 1969 dominate the blend. Relatively new Chardonnay clones 95 and 548 are impressive enough to add to the blend.

Cellaring: Will reward careful cellaring for up to 10 years.

Vintage 2018: A cool and wet spring and summer delayed budburst and encouraged good canopy growth and good fruit set before summer arrived and thereafter the season turned dry. Picking over a busy 6 weeks delivering grapes with generous flavour development.

Winemaking: Hand harvested grapes placed in a blast chiller overnight before whole bunch pressing. This gives us very high quality juice, 24 hours settling before transferred to French oak barrels; some 228 L barriques and some 500L puncheons, 30% new oak. Both wild yeasts and cultured yeast were allowed to carry out the fermentation offering complexity and a hint of struck match. Natural acidity was retained by inhibiting malolactic fermentation. Maturation for 10 months in our cool underground cellar before blending and bottling.

Aroma & Bouquet: Bright & flinty oyster shell nose with grapefruits, pears & lemongrass. A hint of vanillan oak bringing a sweet perfume.

Palate: Finesse combine with pillowy fruit weight, this is a wine that is fine boned with citrus flavours dominating in its youth. A citrus energy drives the palate with a pithy interest and texture on the back palate. An extremely fine grained oak tannin framework lingers on the finish.

Critic Reviews

96Points
Halliday Wine Companion

"Hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed, matured in French oak. The highly expressive bouquet is quickly followed by an equally loquacious palate, white stone fruit, oak and natural acidity." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

95Points
The Wine Front

"Quality juice. It has that extra crackle, that extra spark. Nectarine, pear, a touch of the tropics, white honey, cedarwood and mineral. Silken and searing at once. It all drives forward, it all drives on, there’s little spread sideways and yet it’s not short of flesh. Wonderful white wine." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
