About The Wine

The second release of Thomas Wines' The Cote, and another ripper!

The Cote Shiraz comes from the Cote D'Or vineyard in central Pokolbin. This famed site has a rich history that stretches back to the pioneering Wilkinson family in 1866. While those original plantings are long gone, the new vines were put down in 1971 are thriving.

This is a perfectly pitched medium-to-full-bodied representation of Hunter Shiraz, rich yet floral and deliciously approachable in its youth.

A great new addition to the Thomas range - further solidifying Thommo's status as one of the great Shiraz makers of the region.

From The Producer

Sourced from the famous Cote d’Or vineyard in central Pokolbin, the exceptional 2018 vintage is the second release of this single vineyard wine to our range. At almost 200 metres above sea level, on the steep northerly slope of the ridge south of the Audrey Wilkinson Oakdale property. Cote d'Or was one of the first vineyards established by the Wilkinson family in 1866; by Alfred Wilkinson and his son Frederick (Audrey’s father). It was the fraternal home until the death of Alfred just before WW1.The original vineyard has long been pulled out, but seven acres were replanted on this ridge in 1971. The vineyard is dry-grown on relatively deep brown loamy soil, and scattered with permian fossils.

Hand-picked on 31st of January (approx 2 weeks earlier than the 2017 vintage). The fruit was destemmed and cold soaked for 24 hours prior to fermentation. After a further seven days on skins the wine was pressed off to premium French oak (300L) hogsheads ranging from new (approx 20%), second use (approx 30%) and third/fourth use (50%). After about 15 months of maturation, the wine was blended and then bottled in July 2019. Finally, there was a further 10 months of bottle maturation prior to release on 2nd May 2020.

Blend : Shiraz (100%)
ABV : 14.50%
Closure : Screw Cap
Drink Until : 2032
Bottle Size : 750ml

Halliday Wine Companion

"A deep, north-facing slope; replanted in '71, this is a different voltage aromatically: lilac, Turkish delight and Middle Eastern souk. A deep ruby verging on opaque. Thoroughly exotic. Less pulpy than the Dam Block, less earthy and tannic-authoritative than the Belford. A nice splay of differentiation across these single site wines, with this, a stream of expanding sweet fruit. This is the belly dancer." - Ned Goodwin (Halliday Wine Companion)

The Wine Front

"Nutty vanilla oak, ripe, blackberry, chocolate, deep and fleshy, wide-grained tannin, a lot of oomph. Settled acidity, and a big chalky finish. Needs time." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

DDS review

"The second release of this new label is certainly fuller in weight than the inaugral 2017 vintage. The wine displays exceptional depth of character, featuring dark blue fruits, Turkish delight and spicy notes. The savoury texture on the palate is accentuated by an attractive dusty tannin structure, whilst the oak is beautifully integrated providing additional structural compexity. The Cote offers outstanding value for money as a single vineyard Hunter Valley Shiraz." - Thomas Wines
