About The Wine

If you are looking for a hot tip when visiting McLaren Vale, do yourself a favour and make the journey to Samuel's Gorge.

The cellar door looks out on one of the region's most stunning vistas and the brilliance of the wines only magnifies the experience. This is winemaker Justin McNamee's tribute to the Shiraz grape.

Shiraz, he says, "reins over our province and for that matter, most regions in South Australia. Its magnitude in accessibility ought not to be confused with the magnitude of fruit flavour. It has charmed the world because it delivers concentration but concentration on a multitude of levels."

It's a wine built around texture and balance, not out-and-out power. A more rustic and earthy representation of this famous coupling of variety and place. This is one of McLaren Vale's best-kept secrets.

About Samuel's Gorge

Samuel’s Gorge is one of McLaren Vale’s best-kept secrets. There, in his quiet neck of the woods, owner/winemaker Justin McNamee is on a mission to build “wines that are distinctly Australian with reference to the old world for texture, complexity and harmony.”

The Samuel's Gorge wines may be scarcely available but they are highly renowned. Shiraz and Grenache are considered his fortè, but he makes stellar examples of Tempranillo, Graciano, Gamay and more.  Justin works with some of McLaren Vale's top vineyards, preferring to entrust the region's top growers to do what they do best, while he concentrates on crafting the wines together and greeting customers at his much-loved cellar door.

These are wines with a distinct personality and a rustic feel, from an adored cult SA producer.

From The Producer

Shiraz is endlessly fascinating; there are many interpretations of this great grape from region to region, producer to producer. The endless blue skies, bright, white light and ancient soils of McLaren Vale provide us with the ideal platform for creating this harmoniously complete wine.

The aromatics have what is now a trademark Samuel’s Gorge spectrum at its core. While black bramble fruits immediately engage you; it is essentially savoury, with hints of black pepper, worn leather and dried sage that weave their way through the olfactory like the curling tendrils of the wild sweet pea that adorns the winery garden in the cooler months.

Detailed flavours mirror the aromatics, giving rise to plump dark fruit and baking spice. The mid-palate weight is beautiful, and the tannin is fine and mouth-filling. Layers of texture, freshness and intrigue - beautifully stitched together into a silky cloak of flavour.

Enjoy with kangaroo fillet and oxtail ragu, served with broad beans and heirloom carrots with caraway.

"Richly endowed aromatically and pulsing across the juicy mid-palate with dark fruit tones, this is beholden, nevertheless, to plenty of coconutty flaxen oak tones, while violet and iodine allude to more contemporary aspirations.A sort of have the McLaren Vale cake, while eating the elegant slice, too." - Ned Goodwin (The Wine Front)
