2017 Vinden Headcase Semillon

Hunter Valley, NSW

One of the Hunter's best value Sems from a vineyard close to Angus Vinden's heart.

About The Wine

The Sommerset vineyard produces some of the Hunter's most famous Semillons.

Angus Vinden has his hands on a good parcel of fruit from this great site and he's turning out some beautiful wines from it.

It's razor sharp but with a little more generosity than you usually see in the Hunter, and it picked up a massive 95 points from Huon Hooke.

Hunter Semillon die-hards, here's one of the cellar from a young gun of the region on the up and up.

About Vinden Estate

Young Angus Vinden is the owner/winemaker of this much-loved Hunter Valley winery.

Having taken the reins from his father just a few years ago, Gus is reimagining his family's wine label with a string of exciting, modern wines coming out of his cellar.

He sources fruit from some of the Hunter's greatest vineyards, focusing on Semillon and Shiraz primarily as well as turning out a very good Tempranillo.

He's one of the young guns of the Hunter Valley that should have a close eye kept on him. His wines are on the up!

Critic Reviews

Halliday Wine Companion

"Aside from the usual citrus bent of young semillon with juice, pith and zest, this has more unusual and appealing aromatics including curry leaves, white pepper and wet stones. Crisp acidity works its way across the linear palate but it's not so tightly coiled that it can't be enjoyed now as there's an openness as well." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

The Wine Front

"This sees 24 hours on skins, ala Mosel or similar, let’s say, and it spends time in barrel (three months) to mature. Feels like with this release, Angus is in the zone. Fresh, Spring-like wine of vitality and succulence, drinkability and citrusy intent. Loaded with lemon, juice, peel, pulp, it’s an incredibly moreish, acid driven white of pristine nature and delicacy. There’s a touch more going on here than most young semillon, light chalkiness to texture, saline acid profile and a bit more depth to flavour. I wanted to drink and drink and drink this. Really good expression." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Additional Info

From The Producer

Sourced from the Howard family Somerset Vineyard where I once worked, I know this vineyard almost as well as my own. Planted in 1969 over fine sandy loam soils, the fruit was hand picked over two occasions a week apart in early February. The wine shows the character of the old gnarled vines; zesty, citrus fruit, refreshing acidity, balancing minerality with texture. Great early drinking, however patience will be rewarded with cellaring 10+ years.
