2017 Tonic Wines Rosé

Clare Valley, SA

Delicious Bandol-esque Rosé from the Tonic crew.

About The Wine

Tantalising release of Rosé this year from the guys at Tonic Wines. Mataro and Grenache have handpicked from two separate vineyards in the Clare Valley.

The wine spent 5 months in old barrels before being sent to this very stylish bottle and sealed with a cork. It's savoury and structured and thirst crushing. A dead serious Rosé tracking more toward Bandol than Provance in style.

It's a modern Australian Rosé for grown-ups.

About Tonic Wines

Tonic Wines has only been around for a couple of years but the wines have caused quite a stir.

Small batch, handmade, minimalist South Australian wines with an aim to source high-quality parcels of fruit, picked early to capture freshness and vitality. Tonic declares "We don’t really believe in boring wine", and with the remarkable Chardonnay, Grenache, Mataro and Nebbiolo released thus far, there are no signs of boring here.

These wines are produced in painfully small amounts, sometimes as little as 50 dozen per wine. If you are curious about this winery with mystique, you'll have to act quickly to try their delicious wares.

Critic Reviews

The Wine Front

"Clare Valley rose from the Tonic Wines lads, clean and clear as a Spring day. Released in time for the dawning of Summer, but with that in mind the wine could segue to Autumn, handily, such is its light savouriness and added textural interest. Ring the bell, it’s drinking time. Deceptively light but imbued with fine, cranberry and minerally flavours. It’s chalky in texture, brisk in acidity, clear and crisp and clean. Scents are muted, but you get whiffs of pomegranate, almond and watermelon. Bone dry finish and mouthwatering to close. This is just so spot on." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Additional Info

From The Producer

70% Mataro from young vines in Norm’s Block in Armagh. 30% Grenache from the Churinga Vineyard in Watervale.

Grenache 13th April, Mataro 24th April

This is our second vintage of Rosé so we’re still in experimentation mode. With a new parcel of young vines coming on line in 2017 it was the perfect fruit for this style. Both the Mataro and Grenache were hand- picked, before being foot-stomped and pressed directly to old French oak barriques. It fermented wild in barrel, and then sat quietly on its lees until September 2017, when it was racked and a small amount of SO2 was added. It was bottled the following month without fining or filtration.

Blend : Mataro (70%), Grenache (30%)
ABV : 12.8%
Closure : Cork
Drink Until : 2020
Bottle Size : 750ml
