About the Wine

The Tolpuddle Pinot Noir hails from one of the most talked about vineyards in Tasmania.

It has some of the country's keenest wine-minds as its custodians, including Michael Hill Smith MW and Martin Shaw, young winemaking guru Adam Wadewitz and Ray Guerin, one of Australia's most respected viticulturists. With an all-star team and a plot of dirt this good, this is rapidly becoming one of Tasmania's most talked about and iconic Pinot Noirs.

From the dream 2017 vintage and with another year of vin age and winemaking know-how on this great site, this looks to be the finest release of Tolpuddle Pinot Noir yet.  Nick Stock called it "something special", and if you're a true Pinot lover then this wine simply demands a place in your cellar.

About Tolpuddle

On an expedition to Tasmania in 2011, Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith MW purchased a stunning vineyard in the Coal River Valley which they thought had the potential to make some of the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the region.

Tolpuddle is now one of Tasmania’s most talked about vineyards, producing wines of blistering precision and finesse which have received rave critical acclaim. They are highly sought-after and are some of the finest examples of these varieties that can be found anywhere on the Apple Isle. These are premium wines that should be savoured.

"It’s impossible not to mention at least one pinot noir when it comes to cool-climate reds. In Tasmania’s Coal River Valley region, Tolpuddle Vineyard is making arguably the greatest pinot noir in Australia. Under the new ownership of Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith (Shaw + Smith) since 2011, the vineyard has been delivering improved results and now, showing full potential. With an outstanding score of 99 points, 6th release of Tolpuddle Vineyard pinot noir is conclusive proof as it is a true vineyard expression with much refinement. Whether it’s the wildly attractive fruit aromas or the outstanding palate with fresh fruit flavors and long, helix-like tannins, this pinot noir has truly impressed us." - James Suckling

DDS review

"This 6th release of Tolpuddle Vineyard Pinot Noir is the finest work to date, as it shows refinement and true vineyard expression. The fruit aromas are wildly alluring with red and dark cherries, red plums, strawberries, pink grapefruit, blood oranges, peaches and pomegranate. Some light peppery notes and an array of freshly ground, hard brown spices, stony and sappy elements, crushed roses and violets. Very complex. The palate is just as impressive with strikingly resolved mix of power and elegance. Flavours of red and dark cherries, persimmon, plums and blackberries are encased in a sleeve of helix-like tannins, which also carry long and emanate waves of fresh fruit flavour. Intense red cherries and red plums hold the finish long and pure. This is something special. Drink or hold." - Nick Stock (James Suckling)

Australian Wine Review

"Spends just 9 months in barrel. Otago-esque form here – there’s that boysenberry purple edge you see in Central Pinot too. Otago via Coal River Valley. Is it a latitude thing? Anyway, this is ripe and the acid is soft but there’s a quantum of flavour. A ripe year in context with plum juiciness and a ripple of whole bunch spice, the effect ripe and full and generous. Plush, generous and immediately attractive, but there’s spice and structure and tannins. 1er Cru quality again.Best drinking: Good now, though will appreciate a year or so in bottle. Then over five years. 18.5/20, 94/100. 13.5%, $83. Would I buy it? I like and value-wise it stacks up. But the Chardonnay I enjoyed even more." - Andrew Graham (Australian Wine Review)
