2017 Thomas Wines Braemore Semillon

Hunter Valley, NSW

Excellent release of one of the Hunter Valley's most loved Semillons.

About The Wine

This is one rockstar of a Semillon. Tagged as the “Blonde Maestro” by The Wine Front’s Gary Walsh, Andrew Thomas is one of the modern day Hunter Valley heroes.

A mentor to the next generation of Hunter winemakers. Sourced from one of the very best Semillon vineyards in the Hunter, whole bunch pressed, and five weeks on lees in stainless.

There's no tricks here, just a great vineyard expression nursed to bottle by one of the region's best. The pedigree of his Braemore Semillon is one of the most revered in the industry.

This single vineyard wine is remarkable for its ability to show well in its youth as well as with a decade or more in the cellar. The 2017 looks set to be a classic vintage of Braemore, Thommo saying it reminds him of the epic 2007 release. This is Hunter Semillon at its absolute best.

Critic Reviews

DDS review

Far out this is good. Laser focus, it cuts a mean line through the mouth. Lemon and lime zest with acidity strung as tight as piano wire. There's crunch. There's pucker. The purity is astonishing. Only time will tell but early on it looks like one of the great Braemores. - Different Drop Wine Team

Additional Info

From The Producer

Hunter Valley semillon is one of the worlds most uniquely regional wine styles. The Braemore vineyard (planted 1969) is situated on the sandy alluvial flats of Hermitage Road, Pokolbin, and consistently produces semillon featuring freshness, vibrancy and remarkable longevity. This wine has achieved an enviable reputation in recent years as being one of the finest examples of classic Hunter Valley semillon.

The 2017 growing season opened with good spring rainfall, setting the vineyards with abundant subsoil moisture. This was followed by one of the hottest driest ripening periods for many years. Hand picking during the last week of January and first wek of February. Whole bunch pressed to minimise phenolics and fermented with a neutral yeast to enhance the varietal purity. The wine spent five weeks resting on its yeast lees prior to bottling in May. Sylistically, the 2017 Braemore is similar to the awesome 2007 vintage, its fruit generosity providing excellent current drinking as well as being a belter for the cellar.
