About the Wine

This utterly delicious Tempranillo comes from Jericho - a terrific little family-owned-and-run Adelaide Hills producer that is making waves. The Jericho wines are all made in small quantities, with varietal character, balance and approachability the key.

It's definitely a 'joven' style of Tempranillo - best drunk in its youth while fresh and bursting with juicy fruit. Campbell Mattinson remarked of the 2017 "It is indeed tremendously drinkable... One sip and you’re hooked", and it's just that sort of wine - immediately enjoyable in all occasions.

Deliciously approachable, versatile with food, beautifully packaged and tremendous value. Vamos!

About Jericho

Jericho is one of the most exciting emerging producers in South Australia, consistently churning out delicious, characterful and brilliantly priced wines in all styles.

Family owned and run with experienced winemaker Neil Jericho at the helm, they source both traditional and alternative varieties from various vineyards around McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills. Neil sums up the Jericho philosophy: “in every wine I like to see varietal flavour and character. I don’t want to overpower the fruit with oak. It’s got to be in balance, with nothing sticking out. They’ve got to be drinkable!”

Modern, creative and smashable wines and across the range, amazing value.

The Wine Front

"Jericho’s Tempranillo goes into old French oak for a short period before being released with all its juicy drinkability intact. It is indeed tremendously drinkable. It is because it’s full of such sweet, juicy fruit but it’s also complex, textural, smoky and tannic. Clove and general reductive characters play through red- and blue-berries. One sip and you’re hooked. It’s not a deep or imposing red, and it’s certainly not thick, but there’s so much going on in the glass, and it works both on its own and at the dining table." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Winemakers Notes

An early release, ‘joven’ (young) style of Tempranillo. A soft extraction process followed by ageing in old french oak for only four months, preserves the soft and aromatic flavours. Giving the wine a fresh, juicy and vibrant palate with soft tannins and an elegant finish.

Vineyards

The vineyards are located in the southern end of the Adelaide Hills which is quite a cool part of the hills. The vines are located on a loamy soil over clay which influences the fruit flavours of the grapes and resulting wine with soft fruit and fine tannins.

Joven Style

A significant influence towards making this style is to press the grapes at an earlier stage of fermentation. Pressing the ferment at this stage means that less tannins were able to build up in the wine resulting in a much softer wine. A wine what allows it to be drunk at an early age. The wine spent a small amount of time in old french oak barrels to build some influence of oak but not to subdue the fresh juiciness of the wine.

Food Pairing

This wine is a great option to enjoy any time of the year, any time of the day and with a wide range of food. Perfect for your summer BBQ’s. Great with pizza, pasta and tapas. Cellaring Drink within 3-4 years while the flavours are fresh and juicy.
