About The Wine

This is the best value way to get yourself an introduction to the superb Barossan wines of James Halliday's 2021 Winemaker of the Year, Brett Grocke.

Barossa Mataro is often the bridesmaid, rarely the bride. Here, Grocke puts it front and centre with Shiraz working the back-up mic.

Mataro from the Hoffmann Sand Block vineyard is framed by 25% Shiraz from Brett's Magnolia block into a smooth, seductive red wine that delivers outrageous value for money.

It's deep, earthy, savoury and stacked with ripe, open fruit. It's the perfect everyday Barossa red from a rising star of the region.

About Eperosa

Eperosa is Brett Grocke's heart and soul.

Grocke is a fifth generation born and raised Barossa viticulturalist/winemaker. Eperosa is the vessel through which he tells the stories of the small patches of the Barossa which he has cared for his whole life. He works with long-established vineyards planted on ancient soils and channels the regional warmth, richness and power of the Barossa with a deft artist's touch.

These wines are honest, robust and made with minimal intervention. A true representation of the modern Barossa with old vines and a rich family heritage as the backdrop.

Grocke's star is on the rise, being named James Halliday's Winemaker of the Year for 2021.

From The Producer

The Hoffmann Sand Block Mataro is farmed by the Hoffmann family in the sub region of Ebenezer. The vines grow on a fine, windblown siliceous sand overlying clay at depth producing fruit with bright red musk and spicy aromatics. The fruit was green bunch thinned post veraison leaving only the best fruit to reach harvest and the wine aged for 15 months in a 1650L foudre.

The Magnolia Road Shiraz was sourced from the 1996 planting which is dry grown on a deep bed of alluvial granitic sand producing fruit with ferrous red berry aromatics and fine grain tannins. The block is run organically, rod and spur pruned, bunch thinned and the fruit handpicked. The wine aged in French oak hogsheads. This wine shows the beauty of blending and the harmony that Mataro and Shiraz have together.

The Wine Front

"I nearly blindsided myself with this wine thanks to my general disappointment with Barossa Valley mataro. This is another thing altogether. It's a blend of 75% mataro from the Hoffman Sand Block at Ebenezer and 25% shiraz from the Magnolia Road Vineyard at Vine Vale. The mataro was green bunch-thinned post veraison, and matured in a 1650l foudre, the organically farmed shiraz also bunch-thinned, and aged in French hogsheads. It's supple and silky, the mouthfeel superb." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)
