About The Wine

The Ironheart Shiraz is a blend of the best barrels from the most 'profound' block of Shiraz on the biodynamically grown Yangarra estate in McLaren Vale.

This, the most distinctive of the twelve blocks of Shiraz on the Yangarra vineyard, yields Shiraz fruit of immense concentration and complexity. The wine has an easy power and authority, a commanding presence and a wine built for great things in coming decades.

The fruit is rich yet balanced, the viticultural team at Yangarra mustering the regional concentration and stature of their hero variety whilst maintaining freshness and purity at the same time.

It's big but beautiful is the message. A benchmark example of Shiraz from this region and now one of the most collectable in all of South Australia.

About Yangarra

Yangarra Estate is one of a small group of powerhouse wineries to raise its head from the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs in McLaren Vale. Their wines are made entirely from an amazing old bush vine single vineyard, with the 2016 Halliday Winemaker of the Year, Peter Fraser, pulling the reins as winemaker. They are a certified biodynamic wine producer, and have even been named International Winery of the Year, twice!

They specialise in varieties found in the Rhone Valley. In the reds, their Grenache is as good as any in the land and is truly world class, with Shiraz and Mourvedre not far behind. The same applies to whites, the Roussanne expressions from Fraser’s experimentation with ceramic eggs are some of the most interesting in the country. In time, each of the 13 Rhone varieties will be grown on the Yangarra block.

A premium benchmark for the Blewitt Springs sub-region, and one of the country's modern day icon producers.

From The Producer

The name Ironheart speaks to the reddish ironstone gravel soil and represents the most eloquent expression of Shiraz from our unique estate. This wine aspires to be a powerhouse, yet showcasing perfume and an elegant side to its dense sanguine character and tannin-built structure.

Sourced from block 15 (1.8 Ha) which lies amongst a gravelly ironstone outcrop (where the North Maslin sand geology comes to the surface). Of the twelve individual blocks of Shiraz on our estate, this block produces the most profound fruit.

The vines are spur pruned to approximated 24 buds per vine on a single cordon, and shoot thinned to the same number every spring. We use a vertical shoot positioned trellis, but allow approximately half the canopy to be left out in a controlled sprawl, giving us nice dappled light. When bunch closure is complete, we remove any leaves surrounding the bunches to ensure no shading of any fruit.

The vineyard is certified biodynamic (certification # 11587) with Australian Certified Organic. We have quite a practical approach, with our philosophy focused around healthy and alive soil, which involves no use of synthetic herbicides or fungicides, use of compost and biodynamic preparations, use of sheep in winter to graze under vine, and minimal mechanical soil disruption.

WINEMAKING INFORMATION

The fruit was hand-picked, and 25% whole bunches retained. The remaining fruit was destemmed and mechanically sorted. 5 day cold soak at approximately 10 degrees. Open fermenters used, wild yeast ferment. Plunging and some gentle délestage occurred during fermentation. The wine was kept on yeast lees in 35% new French oak and 65% older French oak for 18 months. Each year we select individual barrels that showcase the characters of the ironstone that the vine grows in. Certified organic/biodynamic.

The Wine Front

"Lovely wine this. Straight up impressive. Sandy swish of tannins is the lingering thought, but there’s dark berry-cherry perfume, ripe of course, but shy of over done, sniffs of old spice cupboard, succulence writ large. It’s long, fine and elegant in its way, but doesn’t forget the earthy, regional grunt of the region. Just enough of everything, plus an individual personality, and the wine feels gently done. Again, a lovely wine." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

The Real Review

"An outstanding colour with a mulberry hue. Glorious sweet-fruited aromatics. Vibrant, pure, mulberry aromatics. Tight, pure, poised, lively. Not a foot out of place. Perfectly integrated acidity. Magnificent in its composure. Stylish. Will age gracefully. Vibrant and full-bodied." - Toni Patterson (The Real Review)
