About The Wine

This is the Koerner brothers' take on the famed Cabernet Malbec blend from the Clare Valley.

There are many who believe that these two varieties are the region's best suited and the Koerners certainly make a bold case for it here.

The fruit from their Gullyview Vineyard was picked for freshness coming in at an astonishingly low 12.5% ABV. Though power was not sacrificed, the intensity and depth of flavour here is a regional marvel.

A much more traditional wine here from the Koerners, albeit with their own twist. Quality and longevity were certainly front of mind when they brought this to bottle. This is their finest wine to date and something that should live a long and distinguished life for a decade or two to come.

About Koerner

The Koerner brothers, Damon and Jono, are on a mission to bring the classic wine styles of the Clare Valley into the modern day.

They play with a mix of 'classic' Clare Valley varieties such as Riesling, Cabernet and Malbec and a suite of alternate varieties that show a different side of this iconic Australian wine region.

With fruit sourced from their own family vineyard and a move toward more contemporary winemaking, utilising terracotta and ceramic for fermenting and making as little additions as possible in the winery, it's easy to see why their star is on the rise.

The Wine Front

"From Attunga Vineyard and Gullyview Vineyard in Clare Valley. Produced by a couple of young brothers with a profile rising for both avant garde expressions and some more classic, simpatico renditions (like this). Exciting producer. This wine was tasted alongside Wendouree Cabernet Malbec 2015; held its own, in its own way. Picked for freshness, as you might see at 12.5% from Clare Valley. It holds."   "The perfume is a high point though that’s not saying everything else isn’t with merit. It’s just it’s so darn nice to sniff on. Blackberry, brambles, black olive, currants, pepper, sweet earth. Delight. The palate is bright, tightened with really slender tannins, set on frisky acidity, dark in fruit flavour and shows some anise-sarsaparilla with black olive and faint green herb chiming in. It’s wonderful drinking, overall, and quite fine. Kudos, boys." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Halliday Wine Companion

"Cabernet malbec. Highly expressive on the nose but then stern on the palate. Red wine of gravity and presence, despite its low alcohol reading. Boysenberry into black cherry, graphite into fragrant herbs. Nuts and pencils. Complex in both its aroma and flavour but the authority of the tannin really sets the tone. Will be very interesting to see this as a mature wine." - Campbell Mattinson (Halliday Wine Companion)

Additional Info

From The Producer

95% Cabernet Sauvignon & 5% Malbec. The Cabernet was sourced from Gullyview Vineyard, picked on the 12th March, while the Malbec was sourced from Attunga Vineyard, picked on the 5th March. Both sites are in Watervale and have red clay soil on limestone. In the winery the fruit was 100% desteemed to open fermenters where natural ferment occurred over a 3 week period.

The ferments where lightly hand plunged once or twice a day before being pressed to tank to settle off large lees. The individual wines where transferred to used barriques for maturation, the first part of this lasted 4 months at which time the blend was decided and the final wine was transferred to a 3 year old 700 litre French barrel for a further 6 months. The wine then received a small sulphur addition, was racked and bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Blend : Cabernet Sauvignon (95%), Malbec (5%)
ABV : 12.5%
