About The Wine

Jeffrey Grosset's Gaia vineyard is one of the most extreme in the Clare Valley.

It sits apart as the highest and coolest vineyard in the region. A rocky, windblown site, rugged and largely inaccessible, Jeffrey chose this as his ideal location for producing Cabernet of finesse and structure.

Close-planted at 3000 vines per hectare, each vine yields less than two bottles of wine.

This intense concentration, together with the coolness of the site produces a wine perfect for the cellar.

About Grosset

Jeffery Grosset has set a blistering pace for winemakers in the Clare Valley since 1981.

He is one of the premier Riesling producers in the country and has been recognised internationally as one of the finest winemakers in Australia.

His attention to detail, both in his organically farmed vineyards and his winery, has given rise to a portfolio of effortlessly articulate wines that are the envy of many.

Focus, intensity and immaculate balance are the hallmarks of every wine that Jeffery Grosset puts his hand to.

Additional Info

From The Producer

Jeffrey Grosset established his Gaia vineyard in 1986, just below Mount Horrocks in the Clare Valley, South Australia. Isolated and windswept, at an elevation of 570 metres it is the region’s highest vineyard. Consisting of two hectares of cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc, this strikingly beautiful site is extremely challenging and requires careful management.

Hard red rock predominates, and the rocky outcrops that break through the earth prevent inter-row cropping and weed control through tillage. Instead, seed is broadcast by hand and grasses and clovers encouraged to regenerate. Close-planted at 3000 vines per hectare, the yield is about two kilograms per vine; less than two bottles of wine. That vines manage to grow here at all is something of a marvel, let alone the quality and consistency of the fruit they produce.

Grosset named the vineyard ‘Gaia’ after scientist and environmentalist James Lovelock’s theory of symbiosis, which posits that the earth is a single living organism of immense complexity; one that depends on the full diversity of its species to remain in balance, sustain its ecological health, and restore itself in the face of the changing environmental conditions precipitated by human activity.

Halliday Wine Companion

"Estate-grown cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc, the certified organic vines 33yo. A breath of fresh air, pulling my lip up and out of the Dante's inferno of other wines in this particular tasting. Supple and immaculately balanced, every flavour, texture and beautifully nuanced fruits that are 100% within the varietal makeup, the tannins almost lustrous, so fine are they." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

The Wine Front

"It’s a medium weight wine with class written all over it. The flavours run on strict, straight lines and as it turns out, that’s a very good thing. Boysenberry, leather, plum and fresh blackcurrant flavours are served with overtones of pencil/milk chocolate and bay leaves. Tannin is as fine-grained as can be. Tobacco-like, undergrowthy characters add yet more to the offering. It’s not a thumper; it’s just long, pure and complex." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Delivery times vary considerably with Australia Post and unfortunately there is no Express Delivery Option for wine (because it is fragile and heavy). PLEASE NOTE that we are currently seeing significant delays in the Australia Post delivery network. Strict government health and safety requirements and very high parcel volumes are causing significant backlogs at the main NSW and VIC sorting facilities. Orders are still arriving safe and sound but you may notice slower delivery times and less frequent scanning updates than usual.

FaQs

Do I have to order in dozens? No, please mix it up! You can order wines in any quantity and variation you like. You can order 1 bottle or 50. We challenge you to make the ultimate mixed pack of wine!

Are there volume discounts? No, our pricing is designed to be the best in market already - no marking up and then discounting down! For very large orders (weddings, etc) we are open to negotiating though. Just give us a call.

Do we price match? Yes, within reason. Everyday low & consistent pricing is something we strongly believe in. We want our customers to feel confident they are always getting the best price. If you see a price lower somewhere else let us know and we'll consider matching it. We'll even retrospectively issue you store credit if you have already purchased from us but you see a lower price somewhere later on. Our price match policy can be seen here.

Can coupons and discounts be stacked? No, only one discount or coupon can be applied to an order at once.

I am trying to add more of a wine to my cart but it won’t let me? This means we are running low on stock of that wine. So for example, if the website will only allow you to add 3 bottles and no more, then that is all we have of that particular wine. The good news is we may be able to order more for you. Just contact us on 1300 668 385 or hello@differentdrop.com and we'll organise the additional quantity for you.

Does Different Drop have a physical store? No. Just an a warehouse/office. We occasionally do events however, so sign up to our newsletter or follow us on instagram to stay in the loop.

Can I special order a wine you do not sell? If it’s doable, then we’ll make it happen. Just contact us directly via phone, chat or email and we’ll find out for you right away. Please note that in most cases special orders such as these will need to be in full case lots (6 or 12 bottles).
