About
A great vineyard, in a great vintage, from one of my favourite producers.

About The Wine

The 'Bricco delle Viole' is possibly the wine that defines G.D. Vajra. It is the most prestigious and sought-after of the great Crus made by Giuseppe Vaira.

This iconic vineyard is the highest in Barolo. It faces south, sitting at between 400 and 480 meters above sea level. This vineyard produces classic austere and refined Nebbiolo that ages incredibly well for decades.

It's the focus and precision in this Cru that sets it apart. Endless sheets of shaley, minerally tannin, a head-spinning bouquet of flowers, almonds and a springtime herb garden in full bloom.

It's one of the great wines of Barolo and remarkable value given the pedigree and stature of this wine in the context of the region.

About G.D. Vajra

G.D. Vajra is a small, artisanal family producer and one of the benchmark modern day producers in Barolo.

The wines are now made by the family's second generation, with Giuseppe in the winemaking driver's seat supported by his siblings; Isidoro and Francesca under the watchful eye of father and founder Aldo and their mother Milena.

These are stunning examples of the regional staple varieties, made with one eye on tradition and one on progression. With holdings in the commune of Barolo as well as Novello, Sinio and Serralunga, they cover some of the most sought-after terroir in the region and make the most of it.

As noted wine writer Antonio Galloni once wrote, theirs is “a world of sublime hand-crafted, artisan wines of the very highest level”.

From The Producer

Bricco delle Viole is like a cut of silk: pure, elegant, and ethereal. Born on the highest hill of Barolo, a promontory facing south, embraced by the Alps. It receives the first morning sun and the last ray of the evening. In autumn this vineyard seems to float above the fog, as if detached from time and light.

The vineyard features material from 1949 and successive plantings in 1963, 1968 and 1985. Bricco delle Viole possesses extremely white soils. Rich in limestone, magnesium and manganese, with the contribution of high altitude and the afternoon breeze, these soils create wines rich in finesse, floral aromas and freshness.

The old vines of Bricco delle Viole are the last to be harvested - a wait that makes our heart beat faster, because the weather can change rapidly in autumn. But the patience of the farmer knows that the wait will be rewarded with high aromatic complexity and extreme finesse. The fruit undergoes a long maceration that might go as long as 45 days, including some time with a submerged cap. Malolactic conversion takes place in steel in the spring following the harvest. It's then aged for 32 months in 25hL Slavonian oak casks before bottling. – Giuseppe Vaira

The Wine Front

"It’s floral, but firm, a pretty and seductive nature with a backbone of cold steel. Red fruit, sweet spices, mint and liquorice, thyme and lavender, and a subtle sweet earthiness. Finesse with flavour, a heap of ‘mineral’ stuff, coated with pliant brick dust tannin, the feel of and taste of raw almonds, and a very long precise finish. This will take plenty of time to reveal itself and, indeed, it’s almost going backwards as it sits in the glass. It’s a beautiful wine of energy and structure that’s sure to thrill with bottle age." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

"From the Bricco delle Viole cru, or the vineyard most strongly associated with this historic estate, this is a versatile or "evergreen" wine that always delivers consistent results. The G.D. Vajra 2016 Barolo Bricco delle Viole sees fruit from a seven-hectare vineyard with high exposures positioned at 400 to 480 meters above sea level. This site shows characteristic Tortonian-era soils classified as Sant'Agata marl with fossils. These soils have an enormous capacity to regulate the ripening process, resulting in the longer growing seasons relished by the Nebbiolo grape. In a word, the profile here is classic. You get delicate fruit tones and wild rose with camphor ash, licorice and tar. The wine is beautifully harmonious and ethereal." - Monica Larner (The Wine Advocate)

Are there volume discounts?

No our pricing is aiming to the best in the market already. For very large orders (weddings etc) we are open to negotiating though. Just give us a call. How does the price match work?

Everyday Low & Consistent Pricing is something we strongly believe in. We want our customers to feel confident they are always getting the best price. If you see a price lower somewhere else let us know and we'll match it. We'll even retrospectively refund you if you have already purchased from us but you see a lower price somewhere later on. Our price match policy can be seen here.

I am trying to add more of a wine to my cart but it won’t let me?

This means we are running low on stock of that wine. So for example, if the website will only allow you to add 3 bottles and no more, then that is all we have of that particular wine. The good news is we may be able to order more for you. Just contact us on 1300 668 385 or hello@differentdrop.com and we'll organise the additional quantity for you.

Does Different Drop have a physical store?

No, not really. More of a warehouse/office. We do however offer a Click & Collect option from our warehouse in Ultimo, Sydney. Our warehouse address for Click & Collect is: F5A, 42 Wattle St, Ultimo, 2007

Can I special order a wine you do not sell?

If it’s doable, then we’ll make it happen. Just contact us directly via phone, chat or email and we’ll find out for you right away. Please note that in most cases special orders such as these will need to be in full case lots (6 or 12 bottles).
