The 2016 Nick Spencer Shiraz Grenache is the first red release for Nick under his own private label, and it does not disappoint. This is an equal parts blend of Shiraz and Grenache from Gundagai, a region that Nick believes can produce some of the country's best red wines. However, rather than a focus on region, vineyard or variety, Nick is looking to make a 'house style' for his red blend which falls more into the mould of the great Australian 'Clarets' from days gone by. The 2016 release is fragrant, energetic and finely structured. Gary Walsh awarded it 93+ points, with only a tiny amount released from Nick for his debut, this will not be around for long. What it Tastes Like
"Almost a rose oil perfume here, over spice, ferns, fruit pastille, and red and black fruits. Medium bodied, blackcurrant and blackberry pastille, firm almost bony tannin structure running through it, cool acidity and a delicious sweet finish laced with dried herb perfume, and dusted with fine tannin. Goes very well now, though I think it’ll be better with a couple of years cellaring." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

TECHNICAL INFORMATION 13.5% ALC/ VOL PH 3.65 / TA 6.5 WINEMAKING BOTH THE SHIRAZ AND THE GRENACHE WERE PICKED TOGETHER IN THE VINEYARD, DE-STEMMED AND FERMENTED TOGETHER IN A SMALL 1 TONNE OPEN FERMENTER. THE FERMENTATION OCCURRED SPONTANEOUSLY WITH INDIGENOUS YEAST AND THE CAP HAND PLUNGED THREE TIMES PER DAY. THE FRUIT WAS LIGHTLY PRESSED TO OLD 500 LITRE PUNCHEONS FOR 12 MONTHS OF MATURATION AND BOTTLED WITHOUT FILTRATION. I AM CONVINCED THAT GUNDAGAI CAN PRODUCE SOME OF THE BEST RED WINES IN THE COUNTRY. THE WINE HAS A LOVELY PERFUME OF RED FRUITS, AND TREADS A VERY FINE LINE BETWEEN BOLD POWER AND ELEGANT RESTRAINT. THE PALATE IS WARM HEARTED AND GENEROUS WITH FLAVOURS OF RICH RED BERRIES AND DARK CHOCOLATE. THE TANNINS ARE SOFT AND SUPPLE AND THE LENGTH IS INCREDIBLY LONG. I AM VERY PROUD OF THIS WINE.

Nick Spencer made a name for himself after a hugely successful decade-long stint as chief winemaker at Eden Road, before deciding in 2017 to take the plunge and start his very own label. The Nick Spencer wines are, like Eden Road’s, focused on the regions of the NSW High Country, in particular Tumbarumba and Gundagai. With Nick’s access to some of the region’s best fruit, his wines are all about balance, style and drinkability, with Nick’s stamp of quality on top. Tiny volumes made and an exciting producer to watch out for!
Gundagai is one of the Dark Horses of NSW wine regions. Though it has flown under the radar for many years, some of the most elite producers in NSW are now going out of their way to source fruit from this region. The Cabernet is all class, the Syrah is stunning - if you haven’t yet, trying the wines of Gundagai should be on your to-do list.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades.
