- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Michael Downer is working some magic with the wines under the Murdoch Hill banner. An inspired young winemaker taking the brand in a good direction. The fruit from their home estate in Oakbank makes up the Murdoch Hill Pinot Noir. Michael treats it gently. He loves the fruit from this vineyard and he treats it so. It's an easy wine to like. Slender in frame, ample "pinotsity" to keep the Pinot fanatics in their seats and outstanding value. It's a wine that feels like it went to bottle effortlessly. If you are on the hunt for quality Pinot Noir under the $30 threshold, Michael's will unquestionably deliver the goods.
What it Tastes Like
Great Pinot smells here. Pepperbush, star anise, cherry and sweet earth. It's got a delicate perfume that's thoroughly enticing. It gives a pristine drinking experience with pure, tasty fruit and silky gentle tannins. Lightly framed yet full flavoured, it's the softer side of Pinot Noir delivered just right.
91 points. "Hello again, Murdoch Hill. One of the most consistently good wine producers coming out of South Australia, with a raft of interesting wines, side by side with more ‘classic’ renditions, and all typically well priced. Here’s a more classic rendition. Cherry pip, rose hip, musk and pot pourri. A pretty start from first sniff. Lithe and yet frisky in the palate. More of the red cherry and rose hip jostle going on, a swish of faint, feathery tannins and a brisk, cool acid freshness that drags the pure, fresh fruit flavours long. It’s such a lovely wine to drink, easy as, fun, fresh and vital. No brainer." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

About the Producer
Murdoch Hill is a family-owned winery captained by talented young winemaker Michael Downer. Downer splits the range in two: his clean-cut, consistently high-quality ‘Estate’ wines are excellent value and perpetually reliable, and his quirky, adventurous ‘Artisan’ wines which offer an alt-styling and different shades of the region. With the combination of high-quality Adelaide Hills fruit grown on the family estate and the undoubted talent in the winery, this is a Hills producer on the up and up!
The Adelaide Hills may be the most energised wine region in the country. The sense of exploration and creativity amongst the tribe of talented young winemakers in this region is unparralelled. The Hills has become crucible of Australian wine talent, offering an array of varieties, from classics such as Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, to new varieties like Nebbiolo and Grüner Veltliner for the younger generation to play with. Every vintage brings new colour and complexity to the rich wine, food and produce culture of this cool climate region.
No variety captures the hearts and minds of the wine lover quite like Pinot Noir. It’s the unicorn of many a winemaker. Notoriously fickle to grow, this delicate red variety can deliver a kaleidoscope of flavours and aromas, from the bright and floral to the moody and mysterious and everything in between. The cooler regions of Australia are where Pinot Noir is most at home. Look to Tasmania and Victoria for the best examples, with some quality wines beginning to show from the Great Southern and from the cooler parts of NSW. Falling in love with Pinot Noir can be a life long affair, beware the charms of this most enchanting of grapes.
