About

Michael Downer is the embodiment of the young Australian winemaker, boldly taking his family winery into new territory. His latest releases are some of his best to date, rightfully earning him the title of 2017 Young Gun of Wine.

This Syrah from their home-owned Oakbank vineyard is one of the wines to get him the gong. It’s a wine of detail, it is expressive and evocative. It’s classy cool-climate Syrah, the way it’s meant to be.

Mike Bennie awarded it 93 points and called it a “Distinctive, elegant red of high charisma.”

This wine combines a great site with thoughtful winemaking; a winning combination and a tantalising example of things to come from this exciting Adelaide Hills operation.

What It Tastes Like

“Beautiful cool climate shiraz (syrah) expression here. Murdoch Hill should firmly be on the radar by now. Pretty red fruited, briary, white pepper and charcuterie scents. Savoury from the get go. Medium weight, slinky textured, rose hip jam meets game meat flavours, pinch of pepper and smudged-slate-like tannins to close. Distinctive, elegant red of high charisma. Almost pinot-like in a way. Just lovely really.” - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
