A beautifully different style of Margaret River Cabernet here from the 2016 Young Gun Winemaker of the Year, Josephine Perry.
There are few, if any, other winemakers in Margaret River that would dare release their Cabernet Sauvignon without any new oak, but that is precisely what Jo chooses for her own. It’s about fruit first and formost, her trusting the vineyard and her instincts on when to pick to ensure that all structure in the wine is derived from the grape rather than an oak tree.
It’s a gloriously feminine style of Cabernet - lifted and precise. Only small amounts made and a cracking 94 points from Mike Bennie. This is a unique wine in the Margaret River landscape.
What It Tastes Like
“Pretty as perfume, shows blue fruits, bay leaf, sea spray, faint Chinese five spice, black olives. Just so. Fragrant. So silky, gently sweet, a bite of tannin, long, just ripe fruit flavours of blueberry and faint black olive. So very long, and that bite becomes a subtle pucker in tannin. Mouth-watering, beautiful, truly beautiful, feel.” - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

About the Producer
Josephine Perry is one of the most exciting emerging producers in Margaret River. Her Dormilona label is setting a new tone for the region. She is focusing on sourcing organically and biodynamically grown fruit, making wine with as little intervention as possible, and bringing an alt-styling to the hero varieties of this famous region.
These are Margaret River wines with flair and originality. The quality of her releases was vindicated with her winning the 2016 Young Guns of Wine Winemaker of the Year. Hers is a star on the rise as the scarcity and want for her colourful range increases year on year.
Margaret River is recognised as one of the country’s finest wine growing regions. The quality of the region’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay rival the very best in the world. But Margaret River is no two-trick-pony. There, Tempranillo and Malbec are excelling, Touriga Nacional seems to be quite at home, Chenin Blanc is getting serious and even pockets of Nebbiolo are rearing their heads. Watch this space. Who knows what new surprises are just around the corner from this famous region.
Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the truly Nobel grapes. An inherently structural variety, Cabernet when handled gently can produce majestic wines of grace and beauty that mature gloriously with time in the bottle. Australian Cabernet runs the full gamut of style: from lighter, more finely boned versions from regions such as the Yarra Valley, through the exquisitely complex and firm wines of Margaret River to the intensely powerful wines from the Coonawarra, there is much to explore in the world of Australian Cabernet Sauvignon.
