The Tolpuddle Chardonnay has quickly become one of Tasmania's most sought-after Chardonnay releases. This stunning vineyard in the south of Tasmania in the Coal River Valley is set on a continuous slope facing North-East, the ideal locale for producing top-class, premium versions of Burgundian grapes. The Chardonnay from 2015 is possibly the best release so far by winemaker Adam Wadewitz. The fruit marginally riper than previous releases. The reviews have been blistering with 97 points from Huon Hooke and James Suckling and 95 points from Mike Bennie and Andrew Graham, this is a glorious cool-climate Chardonnay.
What it Tastes Like
"A marvellous wine of great delicacy allied to great intensity. Creamy yeast lees aromas; fine, subtle citrus fruit scents. The palate is precise and focused, seamless and harmonious, with less of the fruit pungency of the 2014 vintage. Great line and length. (100% malolactic fermentation doesn't show)." - Huon Hooke (huonhooke.com)

Depth of chardonnay flavour is inherent, it’s lightly creamy, rests on a steel rod of crystalline acidity, opens gently with marzipan sweet-savouriness and shows pure, quietly powerful citrus and green apple characters. It’s even, flows superbly, has great energy, not a hair out of place. A phenomenal carriage of flavour and complexity. Really good chardonnay here." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front) 95 points " Indeed, this Chardonnay nails it. The Tolpuddle Vineyard was originally planted for sparkling grapes, and this vintage has a blanc de blancs like freshness, the flavours exquisitely precise. It’s a Chardonnay that perfectly cavorts with what is ‘enough’ ripeness, delivering something delicate, emphatically pure and ultra-lean, yet stopping short of the annoying anaemia that plagues many Australian Chardies. Superb wine." - Andrew Graham (Oz Wine Review) 97 points "An extraordinary wine from one of the most perfect growing seasons, this has seen 100% malolactic fermentation, and the way in which the acidity is set into the wine is stunning. The nose has a good serving of toasty hazelnuts and spicy oak, but the bright grapefruit and white-peach fruits take centre stage. Flinty and complex. The palate is cast around a central core of intense, commanding acidity, while peach-custard and lemon-curd flavors hold super long. The acidity pins the finish in place. Stunning concentration and balance. Elegant and powerful. Drink on release in 2017 and for 5+ years." - James Suckling (jamessuckling.com)
This wine is true to the Tolpuddle Vineyard Chardonnay style: fine and precise with firm acidity, and a combination of lightness of texture and intensity of flavour. The 2015 vintage was defined by concentration paired with high natural acidity, and reflects a wonderful growing season, and the results of the detailed work done in the vineyard.

About the Producer
On an expedition to Tasmania in 2011, Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith MW purchased a stunning vineyard in the Coal River Valley which they thought had the potential to make some of the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the region.
Tolpuddle is now one of Tasmania’s most talked about vineyards, producing wines of blistering precision and finesse which have received rave critical acclaim. They are highly sought-after and are some of the finest examples of these varieties that can be found anywhere on the Apple Isle. These are premium wines that should be savoured.
Australian Chardonnay is a seductive variety that comes in all shapes and sizes. From the toasty and voluptuous to the lean, flinty and minerally, there is a Chardonnay out there to suit everyone. Australia’s developing prowess with this variety has been marked by the international community with wine writers such as Jancis Robinson marvelling at the outstanding value to be had right across the country. The prestige brands of Margaret River offer wines of deep flavour and power, often crafting fuller-figured Chardonnay of outstanding quality. The cooler-climate wines from the Yarra Valley, Tasmania and the like are more focused and linear, building complexity around a backbone of pristine acidity. Whatever your preference, there is an Australian Chardonnay to enchant all comers.
