- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Touriga is finding plenty of fans of late. Primarily as a co-conspirator in some of the brightly fruit red blends coming from SA, but also occasionally as a solo act.
This is a look at Touriga in all its intriguing and tasty glory. Matt Broomhead treats this gently. It was fermented as whole berries, basket pressed to old oak, and unfined and unfiltered before going to bottle.
Mike Bennie labelled it a “Charismatic red wine of the highest order.” and “Unreal drinking.” in his 93 point review for WBM. If you are keen to see this variety at its charming best, this great value version is a great place to start.
What It Tastes Like
“Charismatic red wine of the highest order. Perfume is Sarsaparilla meets red cherry. Flavours similar but with this amaro-like herb character. Unreal drinking.” - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
93 points. “Charismatic red wine of the highest order. Perfume is Sarsaparilla meets red cherry. Flavours similar but with this amaro-like herb character. Unreal drinking.”
- Mike Bennie (WBM)
91 points “This is good. Value and quality. Interest as well. It’s ferrous, clovey, floral, spicy and then berried. It rolls with tangy flavour, creaks with campfire, saltbush and red earth. Not a big red but a wine laden with personality. Immensely food-friendly.”
- Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

A “hands off approach” is employed during the making of this wine to give a true interpretation of the variety. The fruit is de-stemmed and whole berries are fermented with wild yeast for 7 days. The wine is basket pressed to old oak puncheons (7-8 years of age) for 6 months. It is then bottled without fining or filtration.
