- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Ross Hill has championed the potential of Cabernet Franc in the Orange region for years. This is their entry level version, named for the newest generation of Robson family. It combines the fine structure of Cab Franc with the fleshy plumpness of Merlot for a balanced and well rounded red that is very easy to drink. Bordeaux varieties that are approachable young are a rare find but this is definitely one of them. Perfect for mid-week drinking or putting away for a year of two, this is a great bet each way for lovers of the Cabernet family.
What it Tastes Like
Blackcurrant, tobacco, cedar, blackberry leaf and gentle oak sweetness. Varietal and beautifully perfumed style of red, here. It's medium bodied and well tucked in. It tastes of soft, squishy redcurrants, raspberry, black currants all strung through fine tannins. Great value little drop for lovers of this style.
92 points "Shows that Margaret River is not the only place to succeed with this unusual, Bordeaux Right Bank blend. It has juicy, almost tangy, red fruits in abundance, the finish soft and long." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
Vibrant purple – the colour more the sum than its parts. Red fruits and a brooding core in concert with oak-derived spice. Its strength is through its subtlety. Finely boned and comfortable in its own skin, the defining feature of this wine is its chalky tannins. A long life ahead of it and compelling in its youth – a style Ross Hill have rightfully embraced.

About the Producer
Ross Hill wines is one of the jewels in the crown for Orange. Winemakers Phil and Rochelle Kerney were nominated last year as a finalist for the prestigious Gourmet Wine Traveller Winemaker of the year. They narrowly missed out on the top gong, but the quality of their estate grown cool climate wines are second to none in the area. Their methodology is “based on old-world techniques executed with modern quality control and precision”, and their wines are well worth seeking out.
The wine scene in Orange is alive and kicking. With each vintage that passes the bar of quality is raised again and again. Pinot Noir is a potential champion for the region but for now Shiraz, Chardonnay, Riesling and Cabernet are the flag bearers. The cool climate and the high altitude vineyards are producing wines of finesse and class and there is some ripping value to be had in this region.
C’Franc, as it is affectionately know, is often one of the more overlooked varieties from the Bordeaux region. Traditionally used as mainly a blending variety, this grape has been experiencing somewhat of a reinvigoration lately as more and more producers recognise its potential to create highly aromatic, crunchy and delectable reds in its own right.
