- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Tempranillo is Mount Majura’s flagship red and unquestionably one of the best in all of Australia. The particular microclimate within the Canberra district that Mount Majura occupies bears a striking resemblance to that of the home of Tempranillo, Rioja in Spain, giving winemaker Frank van der Loo the opportunity to produce some amazing examples of this variety. The 2015 season is one of the best Canberra has seen in a generation and this is one of the most hotly anticipated releases from any winery in the region. This was called "Another wine for which Mount Majura is rightly regarded as a master.”_ with a massive 95 points from James Halliday. If you, like so many, are enamoured with Temp, this wine is one of the finest our country has to offer. Salud!!
What it Tastes Like
"Another wine for which Mount Majura is rightly regarded as a master. The bouquet is highly perfumed, the palate flooded with exotic velvety fruits before becoming more savoury and textured on the finish, leaving the mouth alert, like a pointer in duck season." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)

Dusty black fruits and a subtle musky perfume herald this blend from three Tempranillo blocks within our small vineyard. Typical grainy tannins and a mouthcoating texture make it a completely satisfying wine. Within days of our first harvest of Tempranillo (in 2003) we knew we were onto something. The ferment smelled so intoxicating, and so different from the other varieties we make. That is precisely how the wine turned out, and while we only make small quantities, it sells very quickly. Tempranillo has become our flagship variety. It is clearly very well suited to the site. Plantings are being expanded and this wine now includes fruit from three separate blocks in the vineyard.

About the Producer
Mount Majura is one of the most exciting producers in Canberra. They are quickly gaining fame for producing top class Rieslings and alternative varieties with sensational value across the range. Their obsessive focus on the terroir of their special vineyard is unique, and the resulting wines are spectacular.
Canberra. A mountain of potential. A sleeping giant of Australian wine. The ability of this region to produce world class wines in only a relatively short history is almost second to none in the whole country. We have some absolute geniuses to thank for developing this region. People have taken notice. Canberra wine is some serious gear. With the ability to produce everything from perfumed and tightly wound Syrah, to razor sharp Riesling and a bunch of emerging varieties in the ground excelling, Canberra will be one of the ‘must watch’ wine producing regions in Australia for many years to come.
Tempranillo is a hot-blooded Spanish variety that has found a happy home in many Australian wine regions. Typically, Tempranillo will be medium bodied, showing silky darker fruits and tannins riddled with exotic spices. The wines are more-ish and incredibly well suited to alfresco Australian dining. Unsurprisingly, Tempranillo is one of the country’s most popular emerging varieties and is set to have a big future on Australian shores.
