- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
In 1983 the CSIRO brought the first cuttings of Roussanne into this country. The de Pury family planted them alongside some pre-existing Marsanne and more than thirty years on, this tiny vineyard produces one of the country’s greatest examples of this classic Rhone-inspired white blend.
The wine is matured for around 8-9 months in old oak yet maintains amazing freshness and structure. It is complex and layered without ever being overbearing.
On the 2014 version, Gary Walsh commented that “there’s no doubt about the pulsating long finish..” and every day it spends in bottle, it just looks better and better.
The amount of this wine made every year is tiny. Given the quality of the producer, the vintage and the reputation and scarcity of this wine, it would make an excellent addition to the cellar of any fan of textural whites.
What It Tastes Like
“It has a subtle perfume of honeysuckle, low-key pear and peach, and a whiff of struck match and spice. Light to medium bodied, almost silky and glossy, but shot through with this delightful flinty and citrus-laced fresh acidity. Ripe lemon and lime, perhaps, yet there’s no doubt about the pulsating long finish. I’d say this is going to cellar beautifully too.” - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Marsanne 59%, Roussanne 41%. With an extra year in bottle, the honeysuckle and nectarine aromatics of this wine have settled nicely and seem a touch more deep-set than this time last year. The brightness of the brine, quince and pear skin notes continue to tightly frame the initial generosity and breadth of the nose. It’s all beautifully controlled though – despite the almost full-bodied depth and structure of the wine, there’s still a savoury, perhaps salty freshness, elegance and lift to the palate that makes the most of the old-vine concentration. This really is a wine for contemplation - to be enjoyed as it slowly evolves in the glass - with an uncanny ability to bring out the best in a huge variety of cuisines. As is always the case, serve cool not chilled. – Sandra de Pury

About the Producer
There are few wineries in the Yarra Valley with the prestigious history of Yeringberg. Founders Guill & Sandra de Pury were pioneers of the region and in James Halliday’s opinion, “…(they) are renowned for wines of finesse and elegance that epitomise the finest the region can produce.” These are stunning, scarcely available wines that are simply a must try for lovers of premium Victorian wine.
The Yarra Valley stands tall as one of the country’s finest cool-climate wine regions. Only a short jaunt from Melbourne, the Yarra has become a tourist hot-spot for its stunning scenery, high quality produce, and of course, as the home to some of the country’s most iconic wine producers. From the extraordinarily elegant Cabernets and Syrahs that populate the ‘Valley floor’, to the precise and complex versions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that hail from the higher climes of the Yarra, this region is diverse and in a state of change. As temperatures rise and phylloxera infiltrates each pocket of the Yarra Valley, the range of alternative varieties from continental Europe is sure to increase to create a more colourful picture of the region. The Yarra embodies so much of what is great about the modern Australian wine scene.
