For decades, Bannockburn has established itself as a cornerstone of Australian fine wine. Founded in the 1970s by visionary Stuart Hooper and legendary winemaker Gary Farr, the estate boasts a unique terroir sculpted by ancient riverbeds and sun-drenched slopes. These wines resonate with a Burgundian influence, while showcasing their distinctly Australian character.

Current winemaker Matt Holmes carries the torch with a quiet dedication. His approach reflects a deep respect for the land, evident in the flourishing organic practices that nurture healthy vines and vibrant fruit. Under his guidance, Chardonnay emerges with elegant vibrancy, its fresh acidity balanced by subtle oak. Pinot Noir, the estate's crown jewel, unveils a newfound purity thanks to earlier bottling, capturing a whisper of Burgundian grace.

Holmes isn't alone in this evolution. Viticulturist Lucas Grigsby, with over 30 years of experience, tends the vines with a seasoned hand. Their shared philosophy emphasizes sustainability, from organic composting and straw mulching to fostering inter-row cover crops. This respect for the earth extends to the winery, where minimal intervention and wild yeast ferments allow the fruit to express its full potential.

Bannockburn's heart beats not only in its core range, but also in its celebrated single-vineyard wines. S.R.H. Chardonnay, named after the founder, whispers of ancient marine sediments, its minerality a captivating counterpoint to intense flavors. The iconic Serré vineyard, established in 1984, boasts tightly-packed rows echoing the spirit of Grand Cru Burgundy. And then there's De la Terre, a recent triumph, pushing the boundaries of density and intensity with its 10,000 vines per hectare.

Each bottle of Bannockburn is a story whispered from the earth, a testament to a legacy that continues to evolve. Here, Burgundian influences intertwine with Australian terroir, woven by passion, respect, and time. These are wines that speak of place, of history, and of a future brimming with vibrant promise.

#28: Bannockburn Vineyards

"Bannockburn has been celebrated for its Burgundian varieties and the degree of complexity and depth achieved in both chardonnay and pinot noir. With five pinots produced, the producer has style and diversity of the grape well covered. However, this is not to dismiss the quality of its lively, spice-fuelled shiraz, something of an unsung hero.” Jeni Port, Wine Companion
“These are seriously good wines and stylistically nothing like the Bannockburns of old.” Jane Faulkner, The Age
“The late Stuart Hooper had a deep love for the wines of Burgundy, and was able to drink the best. When he established Bannockburn, it was inevitable that pinot noir and chardonnay would form the major part of the plantings, with lesser amounts of riesling, sauvignon blanc, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz and merlot. Bannockburn is still owned by members of the Hooper family, who continue to respect Stuart’s strong belief in making wines that reflect the flavours of the certified-organic vineyard.”
