Description

This is where the value proposition of the 1314 range gets frankly ridiculous. While this is positioned as Bannockburn’s "early drinking" Shiraz, it is built on a resource that most wineries would reserve for their flagship cuvées.

The fruit comes from the Range and Winery Block vineyards, with plantings dating back to 1996, 1990 and right back to 1974. That means you are getting Shiraz from vines over 50 years old in a bottle designed for Tuesday night drinking.

Winemaker Matt Holmes keeps things fresh and energetic here. The fruit is fully destemmed and fermented with wild yeast, spending just nine days on skins before resting for seven months in hogsheads (only 10% new).

This is a proper cool-climate Shiraz that doesn't hide its savoury side. It pours a vibrant inky crimson and offers a nose full of ripe plums, dark cherries, violets and a distinct hit of "meaty" spice and blood. On the palate, it is plush and juicy, with fine dusting of tannin and an earthy base that grounds the fruit. It's seriously complex for the price.

"Made from estate-grown fruit and matured in hogsheads (10% new). Just as good, if not better, than last year's impressive and very well-priced release... This is a wine that will look even better over the next four to six years."
- Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "Made from estate-grown fruit and matured in hogsheads (10% new). Just as good, if not better, than last year's impressive and very well-priced release. An impressive crimson purple colour. Aromas of dark fruits, freshly cracked black pepper, florals and spice all precede the richly flavoured, gently structured and very well-balanced palate. This is a wine that will look even better over the next four to six years." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

91 points - "This is an attractive cool climate shiraz. It has decent weight of cherry-plum fruit, it comes laced with clove, pepper and wo0odsmoke flavours, and it shows both finesse and brightness through the finish. It’s a very good wine to drink, and the value is excellent." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

1314 Shiraz is made from fruit grown on the Range and Winery Block vineyards, planted in 1974, 1990 and 1996. The 2025 vintage is a barrel selection based on an earlier bottling regime and a younger drinking window.

Winemaking

The Shiraz parcels were fully destemmed and fermented with indigenous yeast. The wine remained on skins for 9 days before pressing and was matured for 7 months in mostly hogsheads with 10% new oak.

Tasting Note

Vibrant inky crimson in appearance, the nose is aromatic and expressive, showing ripe plums, dark cherries, meaty and savory notes, hints of blood, perfumed violet, and subtle spice. The palate is plush and juicy, layered with dark fruit, peppery spice, and a fine dusting of tannin that provides structure. A touch of earthy minerality add complexity, while the wine’s youthful energy carries through to a long, textural, and vibrant finish.

Bannockburn

For over 50 years, Bannockburn has been a quiet force in Australian fine wine. The story began in 1974 when Stuart Hooper discovered and planted this now-iconic site in Victoria’s Moorabool Valley. In 1978, Gary Farr joined as winemaker, bringing a Burgundian lens that helped define the estate’s identity.

Today, Matt Holmes leads the winemaking, first stepping in for the 2005 vintage and returning permanently in 2015 after Michael Glover’s departure. Holmes’ style is thoughtful and site-first - guided by organics, minimal intervention, and an intuitive feel for balance. His Chardonnays are chiseled and composed. The Pinot Noirs - more precise than ever - are some of Victoria's best.

Viticulturist Lucas Grigsby, a 30-year veteran, tends the vines with the same hands-on, regenerative mindset. Together, they farm sustainably - straw mulching, composting, and nurturing cover crops - all to express the site with absolute clarity.

Bannockburn’s single-vineyard range tells the deeper story. S.R.H. Chardonnay draws tension and salinity from ancient marine sediments. The iconic Serré vineyard, planted densely in 1984, channels a Grand Cru sensibility. These are wines shaped by place, not ego. They hum with Burgundian influence, but speak fluently in an Australian accent.
