Description

Marco de Grazia’s eye for a vineyard goes beyond the name of the district. Within Feudo di Mezzo, Etna’s largest contrada, Tenuta delle Terre Nere works with Il Quadro delle Rose, a parcel prized for the supple texture and generosity of its wines.

The Nerello Mascalese vines grow in deep, ash-rich volcanic soils at around 600 metres on Etna’s northern slope. Only fruit from vines over 50 years old makes this bottling, and the site is consistently among the estate’s earliest picks.

The richness of 2024 suits Feudo di Mezzo’s welcoming style. There’s ripe strawberry fruit, cedar and dried herbs, with a smoky note towards the finish; fine tannins give the fruit shape and a little grip.

Awarded 97 points by James Suckling and 95 by The Wine Advocate, this combines old-vine depth with an ease that makes it appealing young. Its generous fruit and supple structure are the draw now, with a strong track record for ageing adding to the appeal.

97 points
"Strawberry, caramel and cedar aromas with hints of vanilla are enticing. Medium-bodied with fine, firm tannins and a juicy, lightly chewy finish. Turns smoky and almost peaty at the end with dried herbs local to the volcanic slopes. Typical and sophisticated."
- James Suckling

95 points
"There is a frustrating effortlessness to it. Chalky tannins and ample fruit convey the exuberant character of the vintage, yet the wine remains composed. Il Quadro delle Rose also has a proven ability to age beautifully."
- Monica Larner (The Wine Advocate)

95 points - "The Tenuta delle Terre Nere 2024 Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo Il Quadro Delle Rose comes from a distinctive old-vine parcel within Feudo di Mezzo, Etna’s largest contrada. The name refers to a traditional cadastral division of approximately 6,000 square meters. Once divided between two families, this became one of the largest contiguous holdings on Etna. The vineyard, dotted with peach, quince and prickly pear, is planted to vines now approximately 65 years old. Fruit from vines younger than 50 is excluded from this bottling. It is also among the estate’s first parcels harvested, generally around October 4 to 6.

The 2024 has a darker cast to its fruit and a heavier center of gravity. “This pisses me off,” Marco de Grazia jokes. Immediately after being racked off the skins, the wine was almost complete. There is a frustrating effortlessness to it. Chalky tannins and ample fruit convey the exuberant character of the vintage, yet the wine remains composed. Il Quadro delle Rose also has a proven ability to age beautifully." - Monica Larner (The Wine Advocate)

Feudo di Mezzo is perhaps the largest Contrada of the Etna DOC: homogeneous in character, but with evident qualitative variations. A bit like you could say about Clos de Vougeot in Burgundy.
The best parcels – such as our “Quadro delle Rose” – exhibit a shady character, autumnal suggestions in its spicy-resin bouquet. Always the first vineyard to be harvested, it also always gives us the most open, generous and smooth wine. Of all our crus it is the supremely velvety one, with the sweetest tannins, with an enveloping bouquet. I love it as it ages ineffably, its crepuscular nature which, as it matures, gains luminosity.
Poultry, pork in milk or roast pork, braised meats, feathered game, but also ragù, finanziera, lasagna.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
