Description

Moganazzi sits between Santo Spirito and Calderara Sottana on Etna’s northern slope – a narrow band of ancient terraces where black volcanic soils meet pockets of clay and sand. It’s one of the newer crus in the Tenuta delle Terre Nere line-up, but it’s quickly proven itself as one of the most complete. The vines are old, the yields tiny, and the fruit naturally balanced between richness and tension.

The 2023 vintage was cooler and slower than usual, which suits Moganazzi perfectly. Marco de Grazia kept the handling simple – hand-picked fruit, gentle extraction, native yeast fermentation and old oak for ageing. No tricks, just clean, expressive winemaking.

The result is strikingly pure. Bright red fruits and blood orange sit over a fine, stony backbone, with tannins that are firm but graceful. It feels poised and layered, somewhere between the generosity of Santo Spirito and the focus of Calderara. There’s power here, but it’s carried with restraint – a reminder that Etna’s strength lies in its subtlety.

"Terre Nere’s wines all possessed unbelievable freshness and complexity as well as huge perfumes that suggested Pinot Noir…These wines are astonishingly complex and ethereal efforts from the hillsides of Mt. Etna in Sicily."

Smoky, almost singed, showing ripe red-cherry jelly, slightly peppery and spicy. Medium-bodied with a firmness well-balanced by fruit and moderate acidity. Drink or hold.

Marco originally bought a plot in Contrada Moganazzi which he vinified entirely for his charity wine project. In later years he was lucky enough to buy another vineyard in Moganazzi which allowed for him to produce Moganazzi under the Tenuta delle Terre Nere label from vintage 2017. Moganazzi, along with Guardiola have always been considered the best contrada of Castiglione di Sicilia. Aesthetically beautiful these vineyards sit at 700m asl with steep terraces covered with vines that average 80 years of age. The soil is volcanic and medium depth with a topsoil of ash and layers of volcanic stones. The holding is small at 1.5ha and the wine has similarities to the Santo Spirito but with an autumnal influence. Tannins are more compact than Santo Spirito and the finish is long and spicy.

"Leave it to Marco de Grazia of Tenuta delle Terre Nere to take what many consider a difficult, lower-quality vintage and turn out a lineup of wines that exceeded expectations—and left this taster in awe. Interestingly, when I asked many producers how they adapted their winemaking in a challenging year like 2023, the most common answer was: “We didn’t change anything.” That’s a disappointing reality at many estates, but not here. De Grazia described 2023 as the most difficult vintage he’s experienced on Etna. Spring rains totalling around 400 millimetres triggered a devastating outbreak of downy mildew, cutting yields by up to 70% on the northern slopes. The eastern side was largely spared, which helps explain the strength of Terre Nere’s whites. The wet spring gave way to a hot, drought-stricken summer, leading to thicker skins and uneven ripening, as many vines shut down under hydric stress. Fortunately, light rains in September and ideal conditions through October helped save the harvest. The team responded with intense selection in both vineyard and cellar, followed by shorter macerations and minimal pump overs. The resulting 2023s in bottle are some of the most exotic, finessed and elegant wines Terre Nere has ever produced. They deliver immense pleasure, but in some cases, such as the San Lorenzo, they reach a new level of depth and texture."
