This is a little piece of Australian wine history.
Legendary winemaker, Peter Lehmann made this vintage port in 1979. ‘79 was his last year at Saltram before venturing out on his own to create the empire that was to become Peter Lehmann wines, arguably one of the Barossa’s most important wine institutions.
He took a little Shiraz from the Barossa and a little Cabernet from Langhorne Creek and fortified it with Brandy spirit. The wine has remained in the Lehmann family cellar for almost four decades until his heir, Dave Lehmann decided to release a small amount as a tribute to his father.
It’s a wine that transports you back to a different time. A time when fortified wines were abundant in Australia. This is an incredibly rare opportunity to take a step back in time with one of the country’s true wine legends.
What It Tastes Like
Unbelievably fresh for its age. Golden toffee and treacle over salted licorice and plum jam. The spirit has kept it so alive, an aging warhorse still with a twinkle in its eye. Finish is long and dignified. Fantastic drinking experience. Such a pleasure.
Production: The wine was made by Peter Lehmann (Dad) in his last year at the Saltram Winery before moving to what is now Peter Lehmann Wines. I have re-released this wine on his behalf. Shiraz sourced from the Barossa. Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from Langhorne Creek.
Colour: Deep burnt toffee over red brick.
Nose: Aniseed, toffee and fine aged brandy spirit initially assault the nose laid over incredibly developed caramelised Olorosso sherry characters with uber ripe plum preserve.
Palate: The aniseed tang of fennel seed studded through rich plum fudge is lifted and cleansed by the old brandy spirit’s knife like edge. Surprisingly fresh and rich fruit characters display the rich fusion of varietal Cabernet cassis and Shiraz spicy red fruit. A time capsule of the ’79 vintage to savour.

Dave is a Barossa boy, through and through. Son of the legendary Barossa icon, Peter Lehmann, Dave is forging his own path as a winemaker. He combines a traditional look at the classic Barossa varieties with some adventurous (and at times ludicrously ambitious) ideas. But one thing is for sure, whether it is making a ripping Barossa Shiraz or a Rosé from 100+ varieties, his love for his region will be at the core of everything he does.
The Barossa has a big reputation. Big in every sense of the word. Known for producing blockbusting examples of impenetrable old vine Shiraz and Grenache envied by much of the world, it is a region that should be celebrated as the region that first put Australian wine on the map. Now, with a new generation of winemakers reinventing the region, there’s more than just power in the Barossa’s bag of tricks. With a move toward picking earlier and pulling back on oak maturation, there’s a fresher, more subtle side to Barossa wine which offers plenty to the modern Australian wine lover.
