Description

Winery of the Year & Best White Wine Collection
"Christian and Matthias Runkel continue to fly high"
- Eichelmann 2020

”One of the finest winegrowing estates anywhere in Rheinhessen.”
- Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter (VDP) - the invitation-only elite of German viticulture

Bischel’s 1G Rieslings are some of the most compelling buys in our first shipment. This three-pack is a brilliant way to get to know the estate, with three distinctive dry Rieslings that deliver far more than their prices suggest.

Based in Appenheim, brothers Christian and Matthias Runkel have transformed the family winery into one of Rheinhessen’s leading names. Their experience includes Keller, Neudorf and Australia’s Tim Adams, but their focus is firmly on the vineyards around home.

The 1G designation marks Premier Cru-level dry wines in the VDP hierarchy. These are a particularly exciting part of Bischel’s range, combining carefully selected vineyard sources with the ripe fruit, freshness and substantial texture we love in the brothers’ wines.

We’ve brought the three together so you can explore the range without having to choose just one. There’s plenty to enjoy already, enough structure to reward some time in bottle, and outstanding value across the pack.

”One of the best producers in the country of premium wines.”
- Wein-Plus.eu

”Crystalline and compelling expressions of limestone.”
- JancisRobinson.com

2023 Weingut Bischel Appenheim Riesling 1G

Bischel’s Appenheim 1G brings Premier Cru-level Riesling into remarkably affordable territory. Drawn from the brothers’ oldest Appenheim vines, mainly in prized Hundertgulden, it’s a great place to start with this producer's top tiers of Rieslings.

A smaller parcel comes from nearby Eselspfad, with both sites sharing limestone-rich soils and south-facing slopes. Warm days and cool nights allow slow ripening, and Christian and Matthias pick in several late passes to catch each parcel at its best.

Wild fermentation takes place in stainless steel and wooden barrels, followed by six months on lees. That time builds a beautifully creamy texture around ripe yellow fruit and herbal notes, with lime-like acidity, a salty edge and fine chalky grip keeping the finish fresh and long.

There’s plenty of pleasure here already, and the concentration and structure to develop with time in bottle. Stunning Rheinhessen Riesling!

2023 Weingut Bischel Bingen Riesling 1G

Bischel’s Bingen 1G comes entirely from Scharlachberg, one of the region's great Riesling vineyards. This has some serious pedigree at the price, and a distinctive Riesling character that we absoutely love. Bingen is bangin', as we heard someone say...

The steep, warm slope in the north-west corner of Rheinhessen is packed with ancient quartzite and slate. These free-draining, rocky soils limit vine growth and produce tiny berries with concentrated flavour, which Christian and Matthias select through several late picking passes.

A few hours on skins precede gentle pressing, followed by wild fermentation in stainless steel and wooden barrels. Six months on lees builds texture around the wine’s naturally firm structure. Flint, grapefruit and wild herbs lead into a taut, concentrated palate with a salty edge and fine grip. It’s punchy and persistent, with bright acidity carrying the fruit through a long finish.

This is a brilliant companion to the creamier Appenheim 1G, showing another side of the brothers’ Rieslings. Premier Cru-level wine from Scharlachberg, with concentration, character and truly outstanding value.

2023 Weingut Bischel Goldberg Riesling 1G

Goldberg adds another excellent Riesling to Bischel’s 1G range, and this 2023 is its first release. It’s a particularly taut, savoury expression, with the concentration that makes these Premier Cru-level wines such exciting buys.

Christian and Matthias Runkel have built their reputation by exploring the differences between northern Rheinhessen’s vineyards. Made from organically grown grapes, Goldberg gives us another reason to follow their work beyond the estate wines.

Lime, grapefruit and ripe apple come through with herbs and a smoky edge. The palate is juicy but tightly structured, with fine acidity, a little grip and a distinctly salty finish that becomes more expressive with air.

Give it time in the glass to open up, or put a few bottles aside to develop. This is serious, concentrated Riesling and puts an exclamation mark on the Bischel 1G range!

Weingut Bischel

Two brothers, a family estate and some outstanding vineyard sites have made Weingut Bischel one of Rheinhessen’s most exciting emerging producers. Christian and Matthias Runkel have led the winemaking since 2006, building on the Appenheim estate their grandfather founded in 1968.

They brought home some impressive experience too. Matthias trained at Keller and New Zealand’s Neudorf, while Christian worked at Tim Adams in the Clare Valley and Backsberg in South Africa, before the pair turned their attention to the family vineyards.

The real draw is the land they farm. Their top Rieslings come from three distinctly different and remarkably old (up to 900 years!) sites: limestone-rich Hundertgulden, quartzite-based Scharlachberg and the volcanic soils of Heerkretz, giving them an unusually broad range of vineyard characters to explore.

Organic farming, carefully controlled yields and picking at the right moment underpin the approach, with use of wild yeasts, lees and old wood where necessary adding texture and complexity. Riesling is a major focus, but the brothers are equally serious about the Burgundy varieties, with freshness, structure and the ability to age central to their ambitions.

Bischel joined Germany’s prestigious VDP growers’ association in 2019, followed by Eichelmann’s award for the country’s Best White Wine Collection in 2020. This is a modern star of Rheinhessen, and tremendous value for money for Rieslings (and others) of this calibre.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
