Description

Winery of the Year & Best White Wine Collection
"Christian and Matthias Runkel continue to fly high"
- Eichelmann 2020

”One of the finest winegrowing estates anywhere in Rheinhessen.”
- Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter (VDP) - the invitation-only elite of German viticulture

Goldberg adds another excellent Riesling to Bischel’s 1G range, and this 2023 is its first release. It’s a particularly taut, savoury expression, with the concentration that makes these Premier Cru-level wines such exciting buys.

Christian and Matthias Runkel have built their reputation by exploring the differences between northern Rheinhessen’s vineyards. Made from organically grown grapes, Goldberg gives us another reason to follow their work beyond the estate wines.

Lime, grapefruit and ripe apple come through with herbs and a smoky edge. The palate is juicy but tightly structured, with fine acidity, a little grip and a distinctly salty finish that becomes more expressive with air.

Give it time in the glass to open up, or put a few bottles aside to develop. This is serious, concentrated Riesling and puts an exclamation mark on the Bischel 1G range!

”One of the best producers in the country of premium wines.”

”Crystalline and compelling expressions of limestone.”
- JancisRobinson.com

94 points - "This could hardly be more intensely minerally, herbal or racy, yet it also has wonderful juiciness. The compact core is wrapped in citrus fruit, and the salinity of the wine is like a cloud that contains everything else. A positively austere finish with restrained power. The first vintage of this wine. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold." - JamesSuckling.com

92 points (Excellent) - "Festering, still quite smoky and reductive citrus aroma with fine stone fruit notes, some herbs, pepper, and clear minerality. Taut, juicy, fairly dense fruit, smoky and slightly dried-plant notes, very fine acidity, grip on the palate, persistent, with a slightly sweet core, but also a coarse spiciness, good depth, has tension, builds more and more mineral energy with air, some yellow spice in the background, ethereal hints, very good, taut, complex, juicy, and spicy finish." - Wine Plus

92 points - "Pale golden yellow. Aromas of lime, wet stone, ripe yellow apple, mandarin and meadow herbs. Fine, ripe acidity on the palate, which carries the precise aromas of grapefruit, sweet peach, lime and lemon balm very well. Attractive minerality accompanies the good finish." - Falstaff

Vineyard

The grapes come from the Johannisberg in Gau-Algesheim. They grow there in a very shallow loess layer on limestone rocks. The vines on the terraced slope are supplied with very little water. This results in very small-berried grapes with firm, fully ripe tannins and a very high concentration of extract.

Vinification

Selective harvesting of the grapes by hand. After destemming, the grapes ferment with wild yeasts in open vats. Maceration is carried out exclusively by hand. After fermentation, the wine matures for 18 months in French and German oak barrels and is then bottled unfiltered.

Tasting notes

Stimulating aroma of cassis and fine wood followed by firm earthy flavours. Lots of spice, tea, liquorice and dense berry fruit on the palate. Very powerful, concentrated finish with a Burgundian flavour and elegance.

Weingut Bischel

Two brothers, a family estate and some outstanding vineyard sites have made Weingut Bischel one of Rheinhessen’s most exciting emerging producers. Christian and Matthias Runkel have led the winemaking since 2006, building on the Appenheim estate their grandfather founded in 1968.

They brought home some impressive experience too. Matthias trained at Keller and New Zealand’s Neudorf, while Christian worked at Tim Adams in the Clare Valley and Backsberg in South Africa, before the pair turned their attention to the family vineyards.

The real draw is the land they farm. Their top Rieslings come from three distinctly different and remarkably old (up to 900 years!) sites: limestone-rich Hundertgulden, quartzite-based Scharlachberg and the volcanic soils of Heerkretz, giving them an unusually broad range of vineyard characters to explore.

Organic farming, carefully controlled yields and picking at the right moment underpin the approach, with use of wild yeasts, lees and old wood where necessary adding texture and complexity. Riesling is a major focus, but the brothers are equally serious about the Burgundy varieties, with freshness, structure and the ability to age central to their ambitions.

Bischel joined Germany’s prestigious VDP growers’ association in 2019, followed by Eichelmann’s award for the country’s Best White Wine Collection in 2020. This is a modern star of Rheinhessen, and tremendous value for money for Rieslings (and others) of this calibre.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
