Description

Bischel’s Bingen 1G comes entirely from Scharlachberg, one of the region's great Riesling vineyards. This has some serious pedigree at the price, and a distinctive Riesling character that we absoutely love.  Bingen is bangin', as we heard someone say...

The steep, warm slope in the north-west corner of Rheinhessen is packed with ancient quartzite and slate. These free-draining, rocky soils limit vine growth and produce tiny berries with concentrated flavour, which Christian and Matthias select through several late picking passes.

A few hours on skins precede gentle pressing, followed by wild fermentation in stainless steel and wooden barrels. Six months on lees builds texture around the wine’s naturally firm structure. Flint, grapefruit and wild herbs lead into a taut, concentrated palate with a salty edge and fine grip. It’s punchy and persistent, with bright acidity carrying the fruit through a long finish.

This is a brilliant companion to the creamier Appenheim 1G, showing another side of the brothers’ Rieslings. Premier Cru-level wine from Scharlachberg, with concentration, character and truly outstanding value.

94 points - "The crushed rock character of this village wine is extremely intense and may be too much for some, but I think that makes it spectacular for this category. Pronounced pink grapefruit and wild herb aromas. Medium-bodied and very well structured, thanks to the ample fine tannins. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold." - JamesSuckling.com

Vineyard

The grapes come from our top vineyard, the Binger Scharlachberg. Quartzite & slate from the Devonian characterise the soil in this very warm steep slope. The high water permeability of the poor rocky soil reduces the vigour of the vines and thus promotes the ripening of extremely smallberried, aromatic Riesling grapes. The Rieslings from this site are characterised by an explosive aroma reminiscent of flint.

Vinification

The very late harvest is staggered by hand according to ripeness. For optimal extraction of the aromatic substances, the grapes are gently crushed in the winery and left to stand in their own juice for a few hours. After gentle pressing, the juice ferments with wild yeasts in stainless steel tanks and wooden barrels. After 6 months of yeast storage, the wine is bottled in spring.

Tasting notes

Aromas of flint, wild herbs and citrus fruits on the nose. On the palate, very punchy and taut, fresh fruit flavours with salty hints shake hands and let the character of the quartzite rock fully come to life. The high concentration and polished acidity give the wine class and length.

Weingut Bischel

Two brothers, a family estate and some outstanding vineyard sites have made Weingut Bischel one of Rheinhessen’s most exciting emerging producers. Christian and Matthias Runkel have led the winemaking since 2006, building on the Appenheim estate their grandfather founded in 1968.

They brought home some impressive experience too. Matthias trained at Keller and New Zealand’s Neudorf, while Christian worked at Tim Adams in the Clare Valley and Backsberg in South Africa, before the pair turned their attention to the family vineyards.

The real draw is the land they farm. Their top Rieslings come from three distinctly different and remarkably old (up to 900 years!) sites: limestone-rich Hundertgulden, quartzite-based Scharlachberg and the volcanic soils of Heerkretz, giving them an unusually broad range of vineyard characters to explore.

Organic farming, carefully controlled yields and picking at the right moment underpin the approach, with use of wild yeasts, lees and old wood where necessary adding texture and complexity. Riesling is a major focus, but the brothers are equally serious about the Burgundy varieties, with freshness, structure and the ability to age central to their ambitions.

Bischel joined Germany’s prestigious VDP growers’ association in 2019, followed by Eichelmann’s award for the country’s Best White Wine Collection in 2020. This is a modern star of Rheinhessen, and tremendous value for money for Rieslings (and others) of this calibre.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
