Description

Winery of the Year & Best White Wine Collection
"Christian and Matthias Runkel continue to fly high"
- Eichelmann 2020

”One of the finest winegrowing estates anywhere in Rheinhessen.”
- Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter (VDP) - the invitation-only elite of German viticulture

Bischel’s Appenheim 1G brings Premier Cru-level Riesling into remarkably affordable territory. Drawn from the brothers’ oldest Appenheim vines, mainly in prized Hundertgulden, it’s a great place to start with this producer's top tiers of Rieslings.

A smaller parcel comes from nearby Eselspfad, with both sites sharing limestone-rich soils and south-facing slopes. Warm days and cool nights allow slow ripening, and Christian and Matthias pick in several late passes to catch each parcel at its best.

Wild fermentation takes place in stainless steel and wooden barrels, followed by six months on lees. That time builds a beautifully creamy texture around ripe yellow fruit and herbal notes, with lime-like acidity, a salty edge and fine chalky grip keeping the finish fresh and long.

There’s plenty of pleasure here already, and the concentration and structure to develop with time in bottle. Stunning Rheinhessen Riesling!

94 points - "Cool and elegant, this is an excellent village wine with a wonderful mouthfeel that some will find chalky, others silky, because it is simultaneously both of them. Undeniably, the chalkiness intensifies to a real crescendo in the bold yet polished finish. Excellent aging potential. From organically grown grapes from the Hundertgulden GG site. Drink or hold." - JamesSuckling.com

Vineyard

The grapes come from our oldest Riesling vineyards in Appenheim. Tertiary marl and shell limestone soils, mainly from the Hundertgulden site and a small part in the Eselspfad, characterise the grapes with their minerals. The two south-facing slopes lie between 150 and 240 metres above sea level and guarantee the grapes a slow, even ripening due to very warm days and cool nights.

Vinification

The very late harvest is staggered by hand according to ripeness. For optimal extraction of the aromatic substances, the grapes are gently crushed in the winery and left to stand in their own juice for a few hours. After gentle pressing, the juice ferments with wild yeasts partly in stainless steel tanks and partly in wooden barrels. After 6 months of yeast storage, the wine is bottled in spring.

Tasting notes

Aromas of spicy herbs and sweet yellow fruits. In the mouth, salty mineral notes are added. A fine acidity reminiscent of lime and the creamy ripe fruit give the wine a great balance of power and elegance.

Weingut Bischel

Two brothers, a family estate and some outstanding vineyard sites have made Weingut Bischel one of Rheinhessen’s most exciting emerging producers. Christian and Matthias Runkel have led the winemaking since 2006, building on the Appenheim estate their grandfather founded in 1968.

They brought home some impressive experience too. Matthias trained at Keller and New Zealand’s Neudorf, while Christian worked at Tim Adams in the Clare Valley and Backsberg in South Africa, before the pair turned their attention to the family vineyards.

The real draw is the land they farm. Their top Rieslings come from three distinctly different and remarkably old (up to 900 years!) sites: limestone-rich Hundertgulden, quartzite-based Scharlachberg and the volcanic soils of Heerkretz, giving them an unusually broad range of vineyard characters to explore.

Organic farming, carefully controlled yields and picking at the right moment underpin the approach, with use of wild yeasts, lees and old wood where necessary adding texture and complexity. Riesling is a major focus, but the brothers are equally serious about the Burgundy varieties, with freshness, structure and the ability to age central to their ambitions.

Bischel joined Germany’s prestigious VDP growers’ association in 2019, followed by Eichelmann’s award for the country’s Best White Wine Collection in 2020. This is a modern star of Rheinhessen, and tremendous value for money for Rieslings (and others) of this calibre.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
