Description

Thomas-Collardot is a tiny, family-run domaine in Puligny-Montrachet, better known for its razor-sharp Chardonnay than sparkling wine. Jacqueline Collardot and her son Matthieu took over the vineyards from Jacqueline's father Pierre Thomas in 2010 and have built a small but serious following for their clean, finely detailed wines, these days from certified organic vineyards.

This Crémant shows the same care they put into their Puligny whites. It’s 35-40% each of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with Aligoté and a touch of Gamay making up the balance, all grown on limestone soils and made the traditional way – bottle-fermented and aged on lees for texture.

In the glass, it’s pale and bright with fine bubbles. You get citrus, green apple and white flowers, with a nice bit of brioche and creaminess from the lees ageing. This is a proper grower’s sparkling from one of Burgundy’s most exciting emerging addresses, and stellar value for money.

This tiny 2.5 ha domaine is run by Jacqueline Collardot and her son Matthieu that was certified as organic in 2023. Their first vintage was 2015 with only one wine, but they have slowly been taking back vineyards that were leased out in one form or another since 1991. The mother-son team told me that 2022 "was really pretty straightforward in terms of the growing season as conditions were mostly hot, dry and clement. We began picking near the end of August and brought in ripe fruit with good yields and solid potential alcohols. The alcoholic fermentations definitely took their time finishing even though as mentioned, the alcohols were only in the high 12 to low 13% range. We do use only natural yeasts so perhaps they were just lazy in 2022! Moreover, we added no sulfur at pressing so that whatever can oxidize and fall out of suspension can do so. We also did the élevage in 350 liter rather than the traditional 228 liter barrels as we believe that there is better wood integration as the surface area exposed to the wine is less in larger barrels. We did use a bit more new wood than we typically do though that was because we really had no choice due to the fact that the quantities in 2021 were so low that we had to sell so many barrels, which of course had to be replaced with new ones. As to the wines, they are really quite good, in fact surprisingly so in the sense that they're super-fresh and bright, especially in the context of a really hot and dry growing season. They should drink well young but age well too." I would agree with the Collardot take as there really are some lovely wines in the range, particularly at the Bourgogne level.
