2022 Ata Rangi Pinot Noir

Ata Rangi has long stood at the very top of New Zealand Pinot Noir, its name synonymous with Martinborough’s stony soils and the powerful, cellar-worthy wines they produce. Founded in 1980 by Clive Paton on a humble sheep paddock, the estate has grown into one of the world’s great Pinot benchmarks, without ever losing its small-family ethos.

The 2022 release shows exactly why Ata Rangi is held in such esteem. It’s made from the estate’s oldest vines on the Martinborough Terrace, including a large proportion of the Abel clone – the so-called “Gumboot” Pinot that’s become part of New Zealand wine folklore. The season brought its challenges, but careful handwork and strict selection meant only pristine fruit made it into the fermenters.

In the glass, the wine is as perfumed and complex as ever: spice-laden notes of clove, cardamom and pink peppercorn over red fruits, rosehip and grilled strawberry. The palate brings that classic Ata Rangi poise – silky, layered, savoury, with fine tannins threading everything together. It finishes long and precise, promising both immediate charm and decades of graceful evolution.

A landmark 2022 release from one of New Zealand’s most important producers.

98 points
"Stunning and captivating, the wine shows dark berry, warm spice, porcini, and toasted almond characters with an elegant floral overtone. The palate is equally enticing with outstanding concentration and depth, combined with silky flow and beautifully infused fine tannins, making it wonderfully structured with finesse and sophistication. Gorgeously proportioned and harmonious with a sustained, graceful finish."

2024 Felton Road Calvert Vineyard Pinot Noir

Felton Road has been making Pinot in Bannockburn since the early ’90s, and Calvert Vineyard has long been one of their most recognisable sites. It sits just east of the winery on deep clay and silt soils, giving wines that are a bit darker, more grounded, and quietly powerful compared to their other blocks.

The 2024 season was warm and dry with cool nights – perfect for slow, even ripening. The fruit was hand-picked, mostly destemmed with a bit of whole bunch, and fermented with wild yeast before ageing in French oak, about 20% new.

The wine shows dark cherry and plum, a little spice and earth, and that firm, chalky texture Calvert always seems to give. It’s structured but not heavy, with clean acidity and plenty of length.

A classic Central Otago Pinot from one of the region's flagship producers.

2021 Rippon Mature Vine Pinot Noir

This Pinot is the clearest snapshot of Rippon in any given year – a blend of all the fully established Pinot Noir vines across the property, many planted in the 80s and 90s on their own roots. The vineyard sits on a north-facing slope above Lake Wānaka, where schist, gravel and old glacial deposits meet.

In 2021, Nick Mills kept things simple in the winery, letting the season and the fruit do the talking. The wine spent two winters in barrel and two more in bottle before release, settling into its shape and letting the tannins knit. There’s no makeup here – just the vineyard’s own texture and detail.

It’s an elegant, fine-boned expression, more about persistence and nuance than sheer weight. You can drink it now for its perfume and freshness, but it’ll really hit its stride after a few more years in the cellar.

One of the Southern Hemisphere's most individual and compelling Pinot Noirs.

"Lovely ripe berries and strawberries with some juicy fruit and forest flower aromas that follow through to a full body with layers of fruit and fine tannins that spread across the palate."

2022 Burn Cottage Vineyard Pinot Noir

Burn Cottage is one of the most celebrated Pinot Noirs in New Zealand, and this is another tremendous release, that could be enjoyed young but would be best kept in the cellar for a few years.

A biodynamic vineyard from day one, this site has been groomed to perfection to produce Pinot Noir that can rival any in the world. Many believe this to be one of the most impressive versions of Pinot Noir outside of Burgundy.

Planted in only 2003, each year the vines get older, the more intense and complex the wine gets. It's the rare combination of power and finesse that sets the Burn Cottage Pinot Noir apart.

95 points
"The 2022 Burn Cottage Vineyard Pinot Noir is light and fine, with a delicate array of cherry, strawberry, red apple and freshly pressed linen notes. Woven throughout is sweet tobacco, graphite, white tea and finely ground pink peppercorns. In the mouth, the acidity works with the tannins to penetrate the palate with flavor, and it has an ethereal quality to it, which marks it as distinctly different from the Sauvage Pinot Noir. This is an eminently pretty Pinot Noir and comes highly recommended."
- Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

2022 Sato La Ferme de Sato Sur les Nuages Pinot Noir

Yoshiaki and Kyoko Sato have built something special in Central Otago, and their 2022 La Ferme de Sato Sur les Nuages Pinot Noir shows why they’re one of the region’s most exciting producers. Leaving behind corporate careers in Tokyo and London, the Satos have dedicated themselves to organic, biodynamic winemaking with a hands-off approach that puts the vineyard front and centre.

Crafted from their chemical-free Mount Pisa vineyard, this Pinot Noir is all about purity and balance. Natural fermentation, no additives, and minimal sulphur ensure the wine stays true to its origins.

On the nose, you’ll find dried strawberry, wild mushroom, and a touch of spice, with hints of earth and tar adding intrigue. The palate is elegant and layered, with deep red cherry and plum flavours carried by fine tannins and juicy acidity. A dusty texture and long, graceful finish round out the experience.

It's a powerhouse Central Otago Pinot that can go toe-to-toe with any of the biggest names in the region.

97 points & No.11 in the Suckling Top 100 Wines of NZ for 2024
"The aromas and flavors are marked with dried-strawberry, nutmeg, bark and mushroom character. Tar too. This is structured, showing fine tannins that give a beautiful mouthfeel and tension. Medium-bodied with a dusty texture in the finish and a long and thoughtful ending. Rather ethereal and energetic."
- James Suckling

2022 Prophet's Rock Home Vineyard Pinot Noir

The Home Block Pinot Noir burst onto the NZ wine scene when its first release, the 2005 vintage, was named in Bob Campbell's top 10 Pinot Noirs in Central Otago.

Since then it has been one of the most consistently highly rated Pinot Noirs in the region.

The Home Block Pinot vines yield intense fruit, winemaker Paul Pujol mustering all he has learnt from his time at noted Oregon producer Rex Hill and in Chambolle-Musigny, Burgundy, to harness the power of his site.

It's an Old-World-Meets-New-World style of Pinot Noir. Structured, savoury and a killer in the cellar

97 points
"A fantastic pinot with dried strawberries, orange peel, terra-cotta, and dried leaves. It’s full and very layered with creamy and fine tannins that go on for minutes. Plenty of depth and very long with tension and a beautifully creamy, velvety finish.”
- James Suckling (JamesSuckling.com)
