Description

This Pinot is the clearest snapshot of Rippon in any given year – a blend of all the fully established Pinot Noir vines across the property, many planted in the 80s and 90s on their own roots. The vineyard sits on a north-facing slope above Lake Wānaka, where schist, gravel and old glacial deposits meet.

In 2021, Nick Mills kept things simple in the winery, letting the season and the fruit do the talking. The wine spent two winters in barrel and two more in bottle before release, settling into its shape and letting the tannins knit. There’s no makeup here – just the vineyard’s own texture and detail.

It’s an elegant, fine-boned expression, more about persistence and nuance than sheer weight. You can drink it now for its perfume and freshness, but it’ll really hit its stride after a few more years in the cellar.

One of the Southern Hemisphere's most individual and compelling Pinot Noirs.

"Lovely ripe berries and strawberries with some juicy fruit and forest flower aromas that follow through to a full body with layers of fruit and fine tannins that spread across the palate."

97 points - "Lovely ripe berries and strawberries with some juicy fruit and forest flower aromas that follow through to a full body with layers of fruit and fine tannins that spread across the palate. Oyster shell and granite-like undertones. Warm fruit character yet cool in the mouth. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink after 2025, but already beautiful." - JamesSuckling.com

94 points - "Soft and fleshy pinot noir with a shimmer of fine, lacy tannins in tow, umami characters, dried, autumnal leaf notes, dried cherry, cranberry, raspberry purity and all the exotic spice. Indeed, spice leads and finishes the wine, the texture a mesh of haze and tension, the length superb. A contemplative wine yet one with high drinkability." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

94 points - "The 2021 Rippon Mature Vine Pinot Noir is a representation of the flavor of the estate. The wine spends two winters in barrel and two in bottle prior to release, and as usual, the wine here today expounds mineral freshness and detail in spades. On the palate, the tannins set in in a manner akin to wet chalk. They are silty and fine and tend to settle on the palate and linger long through the finish. I love this wine: the detail and freshness of it and the flavors of pomegranate, crushed shells, raspberry seed and white tea. Yields were very low, and it was a difficult year in terms of the logistical challenges thanks to COVID-19. "I kept it simple this year; there was so much going on in our lives at that time," says Nick Mills. Vines were planted from 1982 to 2000, mostly unirrigated (aside from new vines) and on own roots, and no adjustments were made to the must. This is gorgeous. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under Diam." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

    Rippon Mature Vine Pinot Noir

A solid Pinot from a beautiful Lake Wanaka of Central Otago. One of the best producers in Central Otago and as good as Felton Road, Burn Cottage and Mt Difficulty.

The farm voice of a distinct parcel of land: Rippon. On the western board of Roy’s Bay, Lake Wānaka, Rippon’s north-facing escarpment forms the meeting point of terminal moraines and coarse gravels, all based in schist, on which some of the region’s earliest vines were planted. Rippon is a wine issued from all of the fully developed Pinot Noir vines growing in this land.

Rippon

Rippon Vineyard is one of the most breathtaking sites in Central Otago.

For over a century the Mills family has farmed this small patch of earth on the banks of Lake Wanaka. Nick Mills is the fourth generation of his family to walk the rows on Rippon. He now farms the site according to biodynamic principles.

The Mills family and Rippon are intrinsically linked. There's a deep connection to the land which Nick translates into their superlative wines.

Pinot Noir, Gamay, Riesling and Gewürztraminer all excel at Rippon. The wines are made with patience and love.

In the wines of Rippon, you can sense everything that is transcendent about terroir-driven winemaking where the story of a place is told through the wines it produces.
