2019 Rippon Emma's Block Pinot Noir
Emma was the great-great-great grandmother of the current Mills generation.
They named this single vineyard expression of Pinot Noir in honour of her.
It comes from a pocket of the vineyard right near the water of Lake Wanaka. It's a softer, more streamlined version of Pinot Noir from this famous vineyard. It's Rippon spoken at a whisper, but it's utterly stunning to drink.
Only a small amount of Emma's Block makes it to Australian shores. Allocations are limited.

This, PJ's 'village' Pinot Noir, comes from a vineyard high up on Felton Road in Central Otago.
The aim here is to craft something that is complex yet approachable in its youth.
PJ includes a little whole bunch which gives a gentle smokiness to what is lovely ripe and open fruit. It's a much more subtle and restrained style of Otago Pinot Noir and one that's immediately approachable.
Still, it shows plenty of power, plenty of fruit. It's a lovely example for the region which will only get better over the next 3-5 years.

The Sauvage vineyard is a 1999-planted site brought into the Burn Cottage fold a few years back, and immediately began biodynamic conversion. It is named after Marquis Sauvage the American owner of Burn Cottage, who also owns the wonderful Koehler Ruprecht estate in Pfalz, Germany.
This is a super-complex Otago Pinot Noir, with mulchy, earthy and wild herb aromas complementing the rich dark fruit.
For the cellar, certainly, but not without immediate charm.

Pinot Noir is what the Mount Edward crew are obsessed with.
There's a lot of different pieces that come together in this wine.
Some portions are fermented as 100% whole bunches, some are fully destemmed, the different batches are hand plunged, everything is fermented using wild yeasts. The final wine is assembled by Duncan Forsyth & Anna Riederer.
The immaculate balance of the finished wine is quite astonishing when you look at it. It's an elegant and refined style of Pinot Noir with a bit of a wild streak.

The legacy of the Weersings seems in good hands with the new guard at Pyramid Valley. The Appellations Series wines are fantastic, perhaps highlighted by this delicious and complex North Canterbury Pinot Noir.
It's a blend of four different vineyards across the Waipara region, all worked biodynamically. A percentage of whole bunches in the ferment and this shows in the herbal, peppery, savoury palate that has tremendous length and a fair amount of power.
The mouthfeel is fine-tuned not loose knit, and there will be more flavours to unfurl with time in the cellar or glass. For now the earth, pepper and spice dominates a Pinot that is not classically NZ in any sense.

Central Otago is well known for their Pinot Noir, where the grape really flourishes in the cool mountainous region.
This offering from Te Kano is somewhat of an entry-level Pinot, made to be enjoyed now amongst good food and good company.
With a blend of fruit from their various Estate Vineyards, the finished product is a gorgeously vibrant and delicate Pinot that has all the signatures of the region - brightness, juiciness and subtle flecks of spicy oak.
