"One of Australia's most celebrated pinot noirs is in impressive form."
- Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)
Applejack is widely regarded as one the finest Pinot Noir vineyards in Australia. Perched high in Gladysdale on east-facing basalt soils, it’s always the most finely drawn of the single-vineyard Pinots - a beautiful place that delivers year after year.
In 2024, Applejack's signature precision is turned right up. A compact season brought an early harvest and pristine fruit. Despite the speed of the vintage, Applejack held its nerve. The vineyard’s cool aspect and elevation did the heavy lifting, delivering fruit with tension, clarity, and beautiful perfume.
This year’s wine is all crushed violets, blood plum, Chinese five spice, and dark cherry skin. The palate is taut and coiled, with a spine of mineral acidity and superfine tannins that hum through the finish. 40% whole bunch brings aromatic lift and gentle grip, while 10 months in barrique (20% new) keeps the oak in the background.
Poised, intense, and commanding, this is a serious release from a vineyard that rarely misses.

"This always highly seductive and perfumed wine has aromas of raspberries, orange peel and cranberries as well as a little musk stick and rose bush."
- Philip Rich
Always the most perfumed of the single vineyard Pinots, and in 2024, Primavera is showing exactly why Woori Yallock has become such a prized postcode for Yarra Pinot.
The season was quick. Early budburst, fast flowering, and a compressed harvest window. That might’ve thrown some vineyards off, but not Primavera. The rich red soils held their nerve through the warm spells, and the fruit came in bright, lifted, and perfectly poised.
This is Yarra Valley Pinot in its most elegant form - rose petal, redcurrant, just-ripe raspberry, and a whisper of alpine herb. A wine that doesn’t try too hard but stays with you. Only 15% whole bunch, the rest destemmed and fermented as whole berries, then matured in barrique (20% new) for nine months.
If you’re chasing finesse over brooding power in the Giant Steps Pinots, this is your wine.

"Tightly wound, this is driven as much by the wine's very bright acidity as its superfine tannins."
- Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)
Bastard Hill lives up to its name - steep, wild, and hard-earned - but the results in 2024 are anything but brutish. This high-elevation site, planted by Ray Guerin in the 1980s and now handled with precision by Mel Chester and the Giant Steps team, continues to reveal its class.
After years of cool, low-yielding vintages, 2024 brought more typical Yarra conditions - consistent warmth, solid crops, and a fast, focused harvest. For Bastard Hill, it meant a more compact, perfumed expression of Pinot: layered and detailed, but with a core of presence that sets it apart.
Handpicked and destemmed, the wine was fermented in open oak vats, clone by clone, before spending 10 months in French oak (20% new). The result is lifted and aromatic with rosehip, blood orange, bergamot and framed by fine, savoury tannin.
Still young and tightly coiled, this is a site with altitude, attitude and serious potential. In 2024, Bastard Hill is one of the more limited of the Single Vineyard Pinots from Giant Steps.

"This is pinot noir of ethereality and perfume, transparency and fine detail; a wine of shapely dark fruit, balletic flow and intricately woven tannins."

"The richest, meatiest and most immediate of the four single-vineyard pinots in '24."
- Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)
There’s always a bit of grit to Sexton. Perched on a north-facing slope in Gruyere, it’s one of the warmer, earlier-ripening vineyards in the Giant Steps stable and in 2024, that heat came fast.
The season compressed. Ripening happened quickly, but the fruit rolled in clean, dark, and delicious. You feel that in the wine. It's all black cherry, blood plum, and a flicker of graphite running through the finish. There’s structure here, but not the type you need to cellar for a decade. This is a Pinot with immediacy, confidence, and crunch.
The G5V15 clone continues to suit the site like a glove. Picked early, fermented with a split of whole berries and whole bunches, then matured in barrique (25% new).
Sexton is the boldest of the Giant Steps single-vineyard Pinots and, as always, one of the most generous on release. No need to wait for this one.
