Description

Primavera is reliably the most perfumed and floral of the Giant Steps single vineyard Pinots, though this 2025 release has an extra something to it. Lou Primavera planted this small Woori Yallock vineyard in 2001, and Giant Steps has been sourcing fruit from it since 2006. At 240 metres on red clay loam with north and northeast-facing slopes, the site has a natural inclination toward fragrance and red fruit that rarely needs much encouragement.

The 2025 vintage gave it something extra. A wet winter, warm dry spring and compressed harvest produced fruit of exceptional concentration, and the wine reflects that. Each clone was fermented separately, the 115 going in as 100% whole bunch while the MV6 and G clone were fully destemmed, with a four-day cold soak before wild fermentation. Eighteen days on skins with gentle gravity mixing, then nine months in French oak barriques (18% new) on lees before blending. Bottled by gravity, no fining, no filtration.

The result is a touch more concentrated and brooding than Primavera typically shows, with damson plum, dark raspberry, crushed violet and star anise on the nose, and a richness and texture through the palate that wasn't always part of this wine's character. The freshness and perfume are still there, the tannins are persistent and finely meshed, and the whole thing is immaculate from start to finish. Our favourite Primavera to date!

"Every sip oozes confidence, class, climate and site. This is all perfume, brightness and give, within a structure, elongated context."
- Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

97+ points
"A more concentrated and brooding Primavera. Aromas of damson plum, dark raspberry, lightly crushed violets and star anise. It's concentrated on the palate, too, with persistent and textured tannins that'll ensure this ages slowly and gracefully over a decade or more."
- Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

97 points - "From Lou Primavera's '01-planted vineyard at 300m on red volcanic soils in Woori Yallock. A deep, bright crimson. A more concentrated and brooding Primavera. Aromas of damson plum, dark raspberry, lightly crushed violets and star anise. It's concentrated on the palate, too, with persistent and textured tannins that'll ensure this ages slowly and gracefully over a decade or more. Different from but equally as good as the Bastard Hill, which shares the same soil but is at higher elevation." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion

95 points - "The Primavera Vineyard is at Woori Yallock, at 300 metres above sea level.
What a beautiful wine. The word immaculate springs to mind. Plums, spices, florals, red cherries and peppercorns. A general succulence. A velvety veneer. Impeccable freshness. Settled, and balanced, but bright. It’s all positives here, start to finish, but it’s more than that. It’s a top flight producer turning out top flight wine. Every sip oozes confidence, class, climate and site. This is all perfume, brightness and give, within a structure, elongated context." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Vintage Notes
The 2025 season kicked off with a generous, wet winter that filled the soil profile with moisture. From there, spring arrived warm and dry. Shoots pushed early; we had fantastic spring conditions during flowering and fruit set. The dry season pushed growth and ripening along even though temperatures weren’t hot, in fact barely warmer than average, a pleasant surprise for the dryness of the season. Harvest came earlier than usual and moved quickly, a compressed vintage that asked a great deal of the team and rewarded the effort with fruit of exceptional quality, concentration and weight.

Vineyard Notes
Location: Woori Yallock Planted: 2001 Elevation: 240 metres Soil type: Red clay loam Aspect: North and north-east facing slopes Size: 12 Hectares After discovering the Yarra Valley wines 25 years ago, Lou Primavera planted this vineyard in Hoddles Creek in 2001. We have a long-standing relationship with the Primavera family, having sourced fruit from the vineyard from 2006. This small vineyard has Pinot planted on two slopes of the gully right at the start of the Lone Star Creek – with MV6 planted on north slope and 115 and G-clone on south slope. This vineyard always produced our most floral, red fruited and fragrant Pinot Noir, with a sweetness and softness.

Winemaking
Handpicked, fermented in a combination of small oak fermenters and stainless-steel open vats. Each clone was fermented and matured separately. The 115 was fermented with 100% whole bunches while the MV6 and G clone were 100% destemmed. The destemmed batches a 4-day cold soak before the start of fermentation. The ferments spent between 18 days on skins, with gentle mixing throughout that time using gravity. The resulting blend is 16% whole bunch fermented.
All parcels completed malolactic fermentation and were then matured in French oak Barriques (225L) – 18% new, 82% seasoned – for nine months. The wine matured in oak and kept in contact with its lees before blending in November. Bottled by gravity. No fining. No filtration.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
