Grenache is currently experiencing a golden era in Australia.
A truckload of Australian producers are finally giving the variety its due. From the sandy soils of McLaren Vale and the ancient plantings in the Barossa as well as other pockets of the country, some truly stunning examples of Grenache are emerging.
Here are six of our current favourites that exemplify the quality that can currently be found if you know where to look. Six great modern producers of the grape are featured here and it's terrific value to boot.
The Cirillo Vincent Grenache is, year after year, one of the country's best-value Grenache. It's also a homage to Marco's father, who passed down all of his winemaking knowledge (spanning 8 generations!) down to him.
Vincent is a charismatic character, just like his maker. It bucks the trend of big, sweet, oaky Barossa Grenache and sits firmly in the bright, cheery and gluggable camp.
A portion of whole bunches give it a lifted perfume and silky texture, while the use of older French oak and stainless steel ensure this is a lot brighter and bouncier than many of its Barossa counterparts.
Exceedingly easy drinking and tremendous value.
"Is this the best value red wine in Australia? It'd have to be up there at the pointy end... delivers so much enjoyment for the price. A cracker."
- Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion) on the 2023 Cirillo Vincent Grenache
"This strikes me as among the best value wines yet tasted this year... Delicious! Drink or hold." - Ned Goodwin MW (JamesSuckling.com) on the 2022 Cirillo Vincent Grenache
Here we have one of the most impressive releases yet from this excellent artisan Barossa producer.
From a patch of vines planted in 1956 by the Schild family in Vine Vale, this is classic Barossa Grenache made with a modern, thoughtful touch. Susan and Michael Papps have worked with this site for over a decade, drawn to the perfume, the consistency, and the elegance that comes naturally from those deep, sandy soils.
Each year they pick in two stages – the first early for brightness and lift, the second later for depth and structure. Some whole clusters go into the ferment for fine, chalky tannin and a little savoury tension, while a small amount of new French oak adds polish without getting in the way of the fruit.
It’s wonderfully balanced – red cherry, pomegranate, rose and warm spice, gliding over a silky palate with gentle grip and that lovely Vine Vale freshness through the finish. Pure, poised and quietly complex, it’s one of those wines that’s just as rewarding now as it’ll be in a few years’ time.

Willunga 100 is Grenache, start to finish. It’s the grape they’ve built their name on, and this estate-grown release is the clearest window into what they do best.
The 2023 vintage of this wine shocked the industry by picking up three trophies - including the Prime Minister’s Trophy for Best Wine of Show at the National Wine Show - an unheard-of result for a $28 Grenache. The 2024 follows in those footsteps with the same focus on purity, drinkability and site expression, showing why Willunga 100 has become the benchmark for McLaren Vale Grenache.
Sourced from their Blind Spot vineyard in Blewitt Springs - a site of dry-grown bush vines on deep Maslin sands - it captures everything we love about the variety in this part of the Vale. Bright red fruits, a little pomegranate crunch, lavender and thyme, and a savoury undertow of spice and earth. The palate is medium bodied and vibrant, with silky tannins giving shape and a mineral thread pulling it long.
Winemaking is deliberately simple – hand-picked fruit, a touch of whole bunch, basket pressing, and ageing mostly in old puncheons – all about letting vineyard and variety do the talking.
At this price, and with this pedigree, it’s one of the best buys in Australian red wine right now.

"If you’re at all curious why Blewitt Springs in McLaren Vale is the most hyped dirt in Australian wine right now, here’s the perfect entry point for imminent addiction."
- Nick Ryan (Top 100 Wines of 2025)
"Bright and tasty. Varietal and good value too. Boxes are being ticked here."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
Paralian’s Grenache Shiraz brings together two of their best vineyards in Blewitt Springs – Marmont for the Grenache, and Springs Hill for the Shiraz. It’s a classic regional blend, made in a way that feels easy and unforced. The Grenache leads with its bright fruit and lift, while the Shiraz brings a bit of weight and spice.
Charlie and Skye keep the winemaking pretty simple here – fermenting each variety separately, picking out the barrels that show the most generosity and drive, and blending them to hit that spot where fruit, freshness and structure all line up. The result is a medium-bodied red with plenty of immediate appeal, but enough depth to take it seriously too.
This is the most open-knit and expressive of the Paralian reds – full of flavour but still balanced, and really well put together.

"Joyously fragrant and supple, redolent of cherry juice, roses in bloom, musk, sumac, cinnamon... a sculpted line of filigreed tannin and vibrant freshness."

"Quite the exotic spicy perfume... Spanish black olive... a more savoury seaweed character closes out a finish of good length, oomph and chalky tannin."

"Junto" is Spanish for "together," and that sums up the philosophy behind this wine perfectly. It is Andre and Selina Bondar's take on the classic McLaren Vale blend, but stripped of the heaviness you might expect from the region. This is designed to be fine, frisky and fresh, a wine built for bistros and backyards rather than the cellar.
The 2025 release is Grenache-dominant (72%), providing the perfume and juicy red fruit core. Mataro (13%) adds a savoury spice and structure, while a small splash of Shiraz contributes a bit of plushness. A notable addition this year is the 7% Counoise from their own vineyard, a variety that helps keep the alcohol in check and lifts the freshness.
To keep things in the lighter spectrum, the fruit is picked early and fermented with around 20% whole bunches. This gives the wine a tight, herbal nerve that cuts through the fruit sweetness. In the glass, it is loaded with blue and red berries, fresh herbs and a savoury lick that keeps you coming back. It is pure McLaren Vale fruit without the sunburn.
"Junto is supposed to be medium bodied, fresh, unpretentious and delicious..."
- Andre Bondar

"The medium-weighted, accessible, everyday drinking red from Bondar, a wine made to fit the climate and culture of the region. And this nails it, again... Such a beautiful thing."
- Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)
The GR/M is Brash Higgins’ take on the classic Grenache-Mataro duo, and it’s a beauty.
Sourcing fruit from the Yangarra Estate in Blewitt Springs is a privilege, and Brad Hickey certainly does justice to this renowned biodynamic site. Situated on the sandy ridges along the eastern flank of McLaren Vale, these vines produce fruit with incredible definition.
For the 2022, Brad has stuck to his preferred method of co-fermentation. The Grenache (70%) and Mataro (30%) were picked simultaneously and fermented together using wild yeast, allowing the varieties to integrate from the very start rather than trying to find balance in the blending room later.
The wine spent 15 months in seasoned French puncheons, ensuring the oak remains a background element. In the glass, it offers a compelling mix of plushness and structure.
The Grenache drives the palate with generous red berry fruit and floral lift, while the Mataro grounds the wine with savoury spice and a distinct earthiness. Underneath it all runs the signature Blewitt Springs ultra-fine tannin profile. It is a polished, articulate wine that captures the best of both varieties, offering immediate enjoyment with enough structure to evolve.

"This is brash and bold, rich, full and grippy. It takes you by the hand and then throws you into the pool... Nothing fancy, but done right. For sure."
