Description

The Yangarra GSM is a class act. This single vineyard wine from the stunning Yangarra estate sets a high bar for all others in the region.

The Yangarra team has focused their attention on producing the country's finest iterations of Rhone varieties and this is arguably his best version of this classic blend to date.

The dizzying aromatics and succulent fruit of Grenache meets the plum/choc combo of McLaren Vale Shiraz and the grunt of Mourvedre.

This is the quintessential McLaren Vale red.

The Vintage Journal 95 Points

67% Grenache, 17% Shiraz and 16% Mourvèdre, all varieties handled separately. 50% destemmed and 50% crushed. Matured in puncheons and foudre for 11 months. Fresh blueberries, bilberries and dark cherries. Some charcoal dust, clove and salted liquorice. Dewy fruit with elegant tannins across the palate; acidity keeps the wine fresh and juicy. This is a lovely demonstration of a wine that can be drunk on its own, would please a crowd and would complement almost any cuisine. A thoughtful and
considered blend, showing its completion now and will age further, say, another 3–5 years. I suggest a summer afternoon bbq and a game of touch footy. Drink now–2030

VINTAGE SUMMARY

A normal wet winter was followed by a picturesque dry spring. The long range weather patterns indicated a shift from La Niña towards El Niño, which favours drier and hotter conditions. In these warmer seasons, we adjust our practices to encourage slightly higher yields and more canopy cover. However, the unexpected summer rainfall in December and January presented a unique challenge, resulting in larger bunches and berry development. Warm conditions prevailed through February and early March, promoting ripening of flavours and sugars with the balance we were aiming for. The warmth led to an intense couple of weeks, during which we harvested the majority of the grapes.

WINEMAKING

67% Grenache, 17% Shiraz, 16% Mourvèdre. Each variety handled separately. Destemmed and selectively sorted in the winery. 50% whole berries retained. Wild yeast ferment. Each variety has a unique maceration. However, the unifying principle is using a very gentle pump over regime, often just wetting the cap, for a minimum of 14 days. Extended maceration for some portions of Grenache. The wine was matured in a mixture of old French oak puncheons and foudre, ceramic eggs and amphora for 8 months. Bottled February 2025.

Yangarra

Yangarra Estate stands as one of the defining properties of the Blewitt Springs sub-region in McLaren Vale. Famous for its ancient North Maslin Sands and gnarly old bush vines, it is a single-vineyard estate dedicated exclusively to the varieties of the Southern Rhône.

For over a quarter of a century, the estate was shaped by the late Peter Fraser. Pete was not just the winemaker; he was the heartbeat of the operation and a visionary who fundamentally changed the way the world views Australian Grenache. He championed "purity, beauty and elegance," moving the needle away from high alcohol and extraction towards finesse and site expression. His pioneering work with ceramic eggs, amphorae and biodynamic farming helped earn Yangarra the title of International Winery of the Year twice.

While the loss of Pete is deeply felt across the industry, the wines remain a lasting testament to his genius. From the world-class Old Vine Grenache and the brooding Ironheart Shiraz to the textural, ceramic-aged Roussanne, every bottle reflects his philosophy of "always a little further." Today, Yangarra remains a certified biodynamic powerhouse and a benchmark producer, continuing to honour the legacy of one of the country's greatest winemakers.
