About

About the Wine

This is the most approachable and elegant of the Navazos Manzanillas - sourced from a range of casks looked after by co-founder and Sherry savant, Eduardo Ojeda.

It is more youthful than their other Bota series wines, average age under flor would be about seven years.

Pristine but still more golden in colour than commercial manzanillas, it cries out for olives and sardines and all the tapas you can eat before dinner.

About Equipo Navazos

The Equipo Navazos project was started by a group of Spanish Sherry lovers led by wine writer and Sherry guru Jesús Barquín, regular contributor to World of Fine Wine and Professor of Criminology at the University of Granada. These “Sherryphiles” were aware, through their own extensive tastings, of a treasure trove of brilliant Sherries that were sitting, unbottled, in the bodegas of Jerez, Sanlucar and Montilla. Bodegas often have butts or casks (bota) of Sherry whose small volume makes it commercially unviable to bottle separately

The concept behind Equipo Navazos (Team Navazos) was to select specific bota of such wines for individual bottling, unfiltered or lightly filtered (Sherry is typically put through a very firm filtration). The wines were selected for their quality and for their distinct personalities, which would have been a shame to lose in a large blend. Initially these bottlings were intended only for a select group of friends and professionals. Yet the response was so enthusiastic that it became very clear to those behind Equipo Navazos that something important could come of this idea; namely that the opportunity existed to remind the world of just how great Sherry could be. To this end the project was expanded to allow for a small ‘commercial’ release of certain wines to a handful of international markets. After three years, Australia started to get a tiny allocation.

From The Producer

This is the ninth release of La Bota de Manzanilla de EQUIPO NAVAZOS, all of them with a pure Sanlúcar character, and this one sourced from the same soleras as No.71, in order to enhance the authenticity of the original style of our manzanilla. It comes from a selection among several dozens of toneles and botas of outworldly quality, casks that have been carefully put apart and looked after by Eduardo Ojeda and his team along more than twelve years, since they arrived to Sanlúcar in January 2007. The estimated average age of this manzanilla is seven years old.

Showing a well settled and profound profile as well as salty and cheerful vibrancy, La Bota de Manzanilla No.93 “Navazos” is an unbeatable match on the dinner table. It excels with dishes from the Spanish seafood tradition: mackerel potatoes, tuna stew, oven preparations and boiled shellfish; and international cuisine: toro sashimi, marinated herrings, mussels. It has been bottled after only the slightest filtration in order to preserve its genuine character and its deep golden color with green hues as if straight from the butt.

"“One of the better-known wines from Navazos has been the Manzanilla, which has been bottled unfiltered a number of times… and averages seven years of age under flor. This certainly has the Guita character, mineral and austere with the explosive youth that often bring aromas of lemon peel and delicious bitter notes in the finish. This is really young and tender and should develop nicely in bottle. This seems to be a little lighter and more approachable. As they already have a lot of old and concentrated wines, it's good to have a less demanding and more approachable Manzanilla." - Luis Gutierrez (The Wine Advocate)
