2023 Adelina Estate Shiraz

The old vines at Adelina’s home block have seen over a hundred vintages, and in 2023, they delivered another beauty. Farmed organically by Col McBryde and Jennie Gardner, this patch in Springfarm sits just south of Clare township and produces some of the region’s most distinctive Shiraz.

Their 2023 is Springfarm in a lighter frame - a showcase vintage for the deep soils and old vines. The fruit was destemmed, partly crushed, fermented in concrete for close to a month, then aged in large-format oak, just a touch of it new. Nothing flashy. Just careful, considered winemaking that lets the site do the talking.

It’s a wine with presence. Dense, savoury, and firmly shaped, but without heaviness. There’s that familiar Clare dark fruit and a touch of mint, wrapped in fine tannins that give it plenty of drive.

Production’s tiny, as always. If you know the wine, you already know how well it ages. If you don’t - this is a good vintage to start paying attention.

"Perfumed, dark-fruited and spice-driven aromas of blueberry compote, blackberry bush... Great balance and lift with plenty of years ahead in bottle. Classy."
- Ryan Montgomery (James Suckling)

"It's rare to see such modest shiraz from Clare Valley... It's a beautiful and subtle rendering of the variety from the region, with vitality and poise as calling cards."
- Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion)

"Understated, redcurrant and herbs, has a quiet energy and charm. A cool vintage character here, but gee, it has something about it."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

2023 Adelina Estate Grenache

Grenache this good doesn’t need dressing up. Grown on 80-year-old vines on the Adelina Home block, this is one of the quiet achievers of Clare Valley - made without fuss, but with a clear sense of purpose.

The fruit was destemmed, half of it crushed, then fermented in concrete and a Drunk Turtle amphora. It stayed on skins for three weeks, then matured in the same amphora for ten months. No oak. No makeup. Just clarity and texture, straight from the site.

This vintage is bang-on. Light on its feet but with real shape and tension, it’s all red fruit, spice, and energy. The tannins are fine and sandy, the finish savoury and clean. There’s lift, detail, and a kind of ease to the whole thing that makes it incredibly drinkable now but it’ll hold up if you want to let it sit.

One of the best expressions of Clare Valley Grenache you’ll find, full stop.

96 points
"This sits beautifully at medium weight, cinched with ultrafine, graphite-laced tannins, very slim-line and succulent... The texture is beautiful, otherworldly almost, the wine delivering levity and finesse for the variety. And, importantly, so damn delicious."
- Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points
"What a beautiful and distinct expression of Grenache this is. Delicate and wonderful."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

95 points
"Bright and pure with high-toned, red-fruited aromas of dried strawberries, wild raspberries... There's a high level of energy and polish here that will develop gracefully in bottle. Drink or hold. Screw cap."
- Ryan Montgomery (James Suckling)

2023 Adelina Estate Shiraz Mataro

This is a blend of mostly Shiraz with a good chunk of Mataro, grown across three blocks on the Adelina estate. About half the fruit comes off vines planted in 1915 - the rest from younger plantings - all farmed organically.

Each block was fermented on its own, with varying time on skins depending on the parcel. After pressing, the wine went into large-format oak for ten months, with just a bit of new wood in the mix.

It’s a firm, savoury wine with depth from the old vine fruit and freshness from the younger sites. There’s shape, dark fruit, and plenty of drive, but nothing feels heavy or forced. It’s balanced, well-made, and true to the place it comes from.

Always one of the most dependable reds in the Adelina lineup and still excellent value for what’s in the bottle.

95 points
"Dark-fruited and savory... showing blueberry compote, graphite and dark cherries. Finely constructed. Drink or hold. Screw cap."
- Ryan Montgomery (James Suckling)

94 points
"A charming wine, tightened gently with fine, dusty tannin, but ostensibly built around a notion of ease of drinking and prettiness."
- Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 points
"This is very good... The Mataro adds a bit of X-Factor, and there’s a bit more substance and oomph to this wine over the straight Shiraz. Excellent."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

2023 Adelina Estate Introspect Field Blend

This vineyard started life as Cabernet back in the ’70s. In 2015, Col and Jennie decided to graft it over to a mixed bag of Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro, Carignan, Ugni Blanc and Roussanne. No recipe or grand plan. Just a proper field blend, picked and fermented as one.

It’s grown just above the winery on lean, sandy soils, farmed organically, and handled without much interference. The 2023 was picked by hand, destemmed, left on skins for less than two weeks, then pressed to big old oak for ten months.

What you get is a light, savoury red with real interest. Red fruit up front, a bit of spice, a little something herbal, and fine, sandy tannin holding it all together. It’s not trying to be polished - it’s relaxed, a bit off-centre, and genuinely fun to drink.

A Clare Valley oddity, but one that works. And one that keeps getting better.

95 points
"It pours with the colour of pinot noir, has scents and flavours of raspberry, cranberry, cinnamon-clove spice and black olive with a touch of regional mintiness. It has slick texture with fine, silty grip of quality tannins, exceptional length and persistence, a sense of freshness and levity. Refreshment factor at its core. Beautiful, original wine."
- Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points
"Raspberry, cranberry, a whole lot of musk, and spiced strawberry, aniseed, and mint and cardamon pods and all the things. It’s light to medium-bodied, has a raspberry sweetness and musky crunch, white pepper tannin, peanut and a bit of a dirty thing happening, but it’s a nice dirty thing, and it’s gently bitter, and the finish is all orange peel and amaro twist. A beautiful mad house, is my reading. Unique."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
