Description

This is a blend of mostly Shiraz with a good chunk of Mataro, grown across three blocks on the Adelina estate. About half the fruit comes off vines planted in 1915 - the rest from younger plantings - all farmed organically.

Each block was fermented on its own, with varying time on skins depending on the parcel. After pressing, the wine went into large-format oak for ten months, with just a bit of new wood in the mix.

It’s a firm, savoury wine with depth from the old vine fruit and freshness from the younger sites. There’s shape, dark fruit, and plenty of drive, but nothing feels heavy or forced. It’s balanced, well-made, and true to the place it comes from.

Always one of the most dependable reds in the Adelina lineup and still excellent value for what’s in the bottle.

"Dark-fruited and savory... showing blueberry compote, graphite and dark cherries. Finely constructed. Drink or hold. Screw cap."
- Ryan Montgomery (James Suckling)

"A charming wine, tightened gently with fine, dusty tannin, but ostensibly built around a notion of ease of drinking and prettiness."
- Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion)

"This is very good... The Mataro adds a bit of X-Factor, and there’s a bit more substance and oomph to this wine over the straight Shiraz. Excellent."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

95 points - "Dark-fruited and savory, showing aromas of blackberries, plums, cured meat, dried herbs and earth. The palate is medium-bodied with firmly framed tannins and bright acidity, showing blueberry compote, graphite and dark cherries. Finely constructed. Drink or hold. Screw cap." - Ryan Montgomery (James Suckling)

94 points - "This is the first release of this wine as an estate-only wine. Some older-vine shiraz (planted 1915) and younger vine shiraz (planted 2013) are blended with mataro (planted 2012). A bouncy, medium-weight and vivaciously red-fruited wine of sweet spice, some faint nougat elements, a touch of eucalyptus and a good dose of fresh, leafy herbs. A charming wine, tightened gently with fine, dusty tannin, but ostensibly built around a notion of ease of drinking and prettiness." - Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 points - "This is very good. It’s hazelnutty, bitter chocolate, red fruit, a bit of spice too. Blue fruit, earth, dried herb and orange peel, cola nut, fleshy tannin, peanut and spice, with a bold finish of excellent length. The Mataro adds a bit of X-Factor, and there’s a bit more substance and oomph to this wine over the straight Shiraz. Excellent." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

    A Standout

A delicious wine made by a consistently excellent producer. Have bought and consumed many of DD’s super tasty drops recently, but this wine has been an absolute standout in terms of quality and drinkability.

Lovely savoury Clare Shiraz Mataro. Great balance and intensity, even better on the second night.

Adelina

Adelina Wines, established by Jennie Gardner and Col McBryde, is situated in the Springfarm Valley of Clare Valley. With vineyards dating back to 1910, the estate includes Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro, Malbec, and a unique field blend. Col and Jennie, both PhDs in microbiology, have transformed the vineyard with organic farming methods, achieving certification in 2020.

Their wines are known for delicacy, purity, and terroir expression, featuring old vine Shiraz and Mataro, exceptional Nebbiolo, and vibrant Rieslings. The 80-year-old Grenache vines produce fine-boned, high-toned wines, while the Shiraz showcases bold flavors and impressive tannins.

Sustainability is central to their approach, with minimal water use, manual weeding, and maintaining native scrub. They are also pursuing carbon-neutral certification. Adelina Wines embodies quality and innovation, offering wines that reflect their unique terroir and sustainable practices.
