Description

The old vines at Adelina’s home block have seen over a hundred vintages, and in 2023, they delivered another beauty. Farmed organically by Col McBryde and Jennie Gardner, this patch in Springfarm sits just south of Clare township and produces some of the region’s most distinctive Shiraz.

Their 2023 is Springfarm in a lighter frame - a showcase vintage for the deep soils and old vines. The fruit was destemmed, partly crushed, fermented in concrete for close to a month, then aged in large-format oak, just a touch of it new. Nothing flashy. Just careful, considered winemaking that lets the site do the talking.

It’s a wine with presence. Dense, savoury, and firmly shaped, but without heaviness. There’s that familiar Clare dark fruit and a touch of mint, wrapped in fine tannins that give it plenty of drive.

Production’s tiny, as always. If you know the wine, you already know how well it ages. If you don’t - this is a good vintage to start paying attention.

"Perfumed, dark-fruited and spice-driven aromas of blueberry compote, blackberry bush... Great balance and lift with plenty of years ahead in bottle. Classy."
- Ryan Montgomery (James Suckling)

"It's rare to see such modest shiraz from Clare Valley... It's a beautiful and subtle rendering of the variety from the region, with vitality and poise as calling cards."
- Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion)

"This is a beautiful wine, kind of classic in its Clare regionality and a sophisticated expression of the cool and wet 2023 season."
- Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

96 points - "Perfumed, dark-fruited and spice-driven aromas of blueberry compote, blackberry bush, roasted coffee beans, violets, ferric earth and cinnamon bark. The classic midweight Clare Valley palate has supple tannins and bright acidity, showing damson plums, dark chocolate, earth and cedar. Great balance and lift with plenty of years ahead in bottle. Classy. Drink or hold. Screw cap." - Ryan Montgomery (James Suckling)

95 points - "It's rare to see such modest shiraz from Clare Valley; even and balanced at medium weight with soft, satiny tannin profile, gentle influence of sweet-creamy oak and general litheness to personality. Raspberry, white strawberry, a touch of ginger biscuit and cardamom with sage leaf, salt bush and green olive elements threaded through. It's a beautiful and subtle rendering of the variety from the region, with vitality and poise as calling cards." - Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "The fruit for this 2023 Shiraz was sourced from the estate-owned Block 4 (planted in 1915), which comprises red sand, mild clay, slate and lime on a clay base. The vineyard is ACO organic certified. The fruit spent 27 days on the skins in a concrete fermenter and was matured for 10 months in larger French oak (25% new). The 2023 Shiraz is leafy and pure, with a glittering array of fruit and silk on the palate. This is structural and grainy yet sleek and poised, and the flavor feathers out through the finish, blurring the lines as it fades over time. This is a beautiful wine, kind of classic in its Clare regionality and a sophisticated expression of the cool and wet 2023 season. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

94 points - "Red fruit, blackcurrant, spice and sage, nutmeg, with something of a nutty and orange peel character. It’s medium-bodied, kind of sappy and autumnal, a green olive and brine thing here, fine peppery tannin, with a cool savoury finish of excellent length. Understated, redcurrant and herbs, has a quiet energy and charm. A cool vintage character here, but gee, it has something about it." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

This blew me away at the price

If I'd tasted this blind, I would have thought this was a wine I couldn't afford. It's complex and hard to nail all of the flavours. Is it berry, plum or forest floor? Probably all three and more. Is it star anise or chocolate? Probably both and more. Its colour is superb and lingers forever. The bottle is gorgeous. This is a superb wine at the price. I'm now wishing I'd bought more. Bugger it - I just did

Adelina

Adelina Wines, established by Jennie Gardner and Col McBryde, is situated in the Springfarm Valley of Clare Valley. With vineyards dating back to 1910, the estate includes Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro, Malbec, and a unique field blend. Col and Jennie, both PhDs in microbiology, have transformed the vineyard with organic farming methods, achieving certification in 2020.

Their wines are known for delicacy, purity, and terroir expression, featuring old vine Shiraz and Mataro, exceptional Nebbiolo, and vibrant Rieslings. The 80-year-old Grenache vines produce fine-boned, high-toned wines, while the Shiraz showcases bold flavors and impressive tannins.

Sustainability is central to their approach, with minimal water use, manual weeding, and maintaining native scrub. They are also pursuing carbon-neutral certification. Adelina Wines embodies quality and innovation, offering wines that reflect their unique terroir and sustainable practices.
