2023 Jean Foillard Fleurie

The Fleurie is one of the rarest, most sought-after cuvees in the Foillard stable. Only a minuscule number of bottles made it to Australia.

Description

Jean Foillard’s Fleurie is one of the most coveted wines in his lineup - often snapped up by French locals before it even makes its way to Australia. The 2023 vintage continues to showcase why it’s so beloved: it’s all about perfume, finesse and that signature Foillard touch of silken texture.

Hailing from vines in the heart of Fleurie, this is classic Gamay given the Foillard treatment: pure, bright red fruit, lifted florals and that unmistakable minerality that sets his wines apart. The 2023 season delivered wines of superb balance and freshness, offering up a delicately spiced bouquet of cherry blossom, raspberry and hints of peony.

On the palate, it’s lively yet supple, with fine-grained tannins and a mouthwatering acidity that carries the flavours long and bright. There’s a sense of both energy and grace here - like all of Foillard’s wines, it feels effortless.

This is one of the world’s great expressions of Gamay, capturing all the detail and nuance that the Fleurie cru can offer. Drink it now for its youthful charm or cellar it for a few years to watch it blossom even further.

"The 2023 Fleurie comes from south-facing vines, the first to be picked within the "Champagne" lieu-dit. It has a little more fruit intensity than the Côte du Py, with raspberry, blackcurrant, allspice and light white pepper scents. The palate is well balanced with fine tannins, gentle grip, sapid red fruit and a tightly coiled, mineral-laden finish. Superb."

    Worth the money

Beautiful gamay from Fleurie. Drank it with some smoked duck breast. Banging

Following Jean's rich and succculent 2022 wines that were beautiful, transparent and will age very gracefully, I was really looking forward to tasting these 2023 wines when I visited in Januaru and I was very impressed. I was told they would be classic Beaujolais and not like some of the richer recent vintages - these are all about the sap, the stoniness the silkiness, the charm and the lightness of touch - it is all there and most of all, so is the all important balance! Anyway, when it is Jean Foillard, we can all be very confident.

2023 is a superb and very welcome vintage that displays the classic freshness and elegance we crave and the signature silky texture that Jean is always able to harness, the vintage providing fine concentration but the wines still show vibrant jellied red fruit, very attractive floral and spice aromas and caressingly silky mouthfeel - as always they all offer delicious succulence as young wines, and as always they are perfectly balanced.

Don't miss these wines, in today's crazy world of wine prices, these stand out as some of the greatest values in the world for the quality!
